I love fashion. I love clothes, edgy style and checking out the latest fashion trends. I loved watching Anne Hathaway go from no style to fabulous style in “The Devil Wears Prada”, fantasizing that I, too, could morph into a fashionista. So here we are, about to embrace a new year of innovative trends and I’ll bet you’re wondering why I used a title for this post that traditionally addresses brides. Well, you can stop speculating and simply keep reading to find the answer.
Some of the items on the fashion horizon for 2017 are off-the-shoulder blouses and dresses, statement jackets and to complement them all, a multitude of trainers (AKA sneakers).
Something Old, Something Borrowed
As a woman of a certain age, I can remember all of the aforementioned having been “trends” at one time or another including wearing trainers with dresses, although at that time they were simply referred to as sneakers. “Something old” and “something borrowed”, reinvented, restyled and repurposed.
Something Blue
“Something blue” and lots of it! This popular shade could be covered exclusively by our passion for denim but for those who seek denim alternatives, there are ample clothing options available in varying shades of this favorite color.
Something New
Lastly, the game changer and the reason fashion continues to capture our hearts, imagination and our money, “something new”. So what is new if everything has been done before? The aha moment is recognizing that the clever and intriguing ways these time-honored pieces are assembled by talented designers, the unique materials used and the slightly different cut of a sleeve, hem or shoulder is what creates the latest trends. I’ve always bought into purchasing classics (figuratively and literally), not only for their clean and simple lines but for their staying power.
What I’ve learned over the years, however, is that the tweaks in the “old and borrowed” ideas make a colossal difference in the “new” final product, so much so that my classics have been collecting dust in the attic for more years than I care to remember. That’s a good thing though since personally, I would not want to miss out on the anticipation and excitement of seeing and shopping for the latest styles. Therefore, I’m now going to return to perusing my abundant supply of fashion magazines and email style alerts before engaging in some online shopping or heading to the mall. And yes, I’m still harboring my fantasy of becoming a trendsetting paragon of fashion even though it’s likely my cat will be my only follower.
