I fell in love with Mango as a teenager while on my first European trip. I remember the Spain based clothing retailer Mango as the one place where all of the clothes fit my hour glass shape perfectly and had a playful yet sophisticated look that often evaded American designers. While other European based clothing retailers, such as H & M and Zara, expanded to the US, Mango remained a European treasure.
However, the wait is over. M.N.G. by Mango has made its American debut. The international favorite and direct competitor of clothing retailer Zara recently opened its first store at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, California. A Mango store was originally scheduled to open in Santa Monica, California, but construction problems have delayed the store’s debut until later on in the fall. South Coast Plaza also houses Zara and according to a recent WWD article, H & M is also planning to open a store at this location in the near future. Mango is currently sold in 81 countries.
Mango plans on opening stores across the US in 2007, including San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas, New York, and other cosmopolitan areas. Although the clothing retailer is known as Mango internationally, the chain has changed its name to M.N.G. by Mango for US distribution to comply with international copy right laws.
