Pre Fashion Week Scoop: Jay Z Launch

Today marks the first day of Olympus Fashion Week. Although festivities
technically have just begun, parties and events have been ocurring all
over the City. Jay Z unveiled his new line Wednesday night at BED.
Turns out, he is taking Roca Wear to the next level with a women's
lingerie/sleep wear line called Sleep Sexy. It was pretty hot--I
enjoyed it. The line was sexy without being slutty, tasteful if you
will. It really seems like Jay is involved with his companies and I can
appreciate that. His line extensions/licensing deals are definitly
always in line with his style.

Interview With Cathy Horyn of The New York Times

Interesting interview with Cathy Horyn of the New York Times. Cathy shares Julie Fredrickson's viewpoint on the need to take bloggers seriosly. Also discussed, Cathy's take on personally blogging and the "imaginary" conflict that some luxury brands feel when it comes to blogging about luxury. I'm sure if Billy Daily was still working at KCD he would have let Julie from Coutorure Media in to see the Mark Jacobs show at the Spring collections fashion week. Other sources for coverage are: New York Magazine, Fashion Week Live website, with coverage by Lauren Ezersky

Fashion Blogger Trying To Interview Anna Wintor of American Vogue

The devil wears green pants! See Almost Girl fashion blogger making contact with Anna Wintor.

I don’t think I have ever been more terrified in my entire life. As much as I talk a lot of shit about numbers being the only arbiter of access in an ideal new media world I still harbor a lot of fear. I know that I am only in my position because of luck, timing, and very little aversion to risk. I talk smack about KCD because I know that they can’t hold us off forever: there are more of us than there are of them and this time the barbarians are out for good. I know that numbers don’t lie because well the economists at the University of Chicago told me so.

But still when I arrived early for Costello Tagliapetra and saw Anna Wintour alone in the front row I didn’t think I had the guts to go up and interview her. I had already tried at Rag and Bone and she waved us off. But heart pounding I steeled myself, left Patryk in the pit, and requested to ask her a few basic questions. She didn’t want to talk about collections because it was too early in the week but I assured her I was interested in her experience and not her opinions on current fashion. Ever the consummate professional she agreed.

Top Shop in NYC?

topshop.jpg

If you have ever visited London, you know the infamous fashion retailer, Topshop! As a student in London, that was the only place I went shopping. If I needed any article of clothing, I was there! Belts, bags, jeans, tops, dresses, accessories, shoes, oh yea and candy (they had a candy section in the store).

Well, I have good news! Topshop has announced its plan to open its first store in the United States in June of 2007. They want to replicate their London store with a space of approximately 60,000 to 90,000 square feet. That’s immense! I definitely can spend a whole day there. Forget the whole day, I can live there! What can I say, they have the best prices and they have the newest fashion trends!

They currently plan on opening it in NYC, however they are unsure. Excuse me Topshop, what do you mean unsure? Honestly, New York is the fashion capital of the United States and it is definitely one of the fashion capitals of the world. It is THE only place to open your first store! First, and foremost anyone and everyone in the fashion industry is located in NYC. If not, they at least have a branch in NYC! Second, everyone in NYC is fashion conscious so you will constantly have business. Last, don’t worry about making money. There are tourists here year round, and they definitely know the Topshop name and brand! So Topshop, I think I am going to make the decision for you and say, YOU NEED TO OPEN YOUR STORE IN NYC!

Philip Green, owner of Arcadia, the parent company of Topshop, if there is anything else I can do to convince you to open your store in NYC, please let me know. I’ll gladly write a proposal!

The Things Women Do For Fashion....

I’m a slave to fashion, and most women I know are like me. Every morning we wake up and spend at least half an hour trying to figure out something to wear. It’s a constant battle to look good and feel great. The stiletto shoes that make every outfit look fabulous don't help either. Shoe companies and their designers really need to think about how the woman feels and what the woman wants. They need to design for the woman! Women at work are wearing these shoes at least eight hours a day. And let me tell you, it is not good for our feet! There is so much technology out there, I shouldn't have to feel like I am walking barefoot in my heels. Well after some research, I have found out the Nike has once again come to the rescue. Not only do they have lines for cardio, cycling, dance, golf, running, soccer, tennis, walking, and yoga they are also developing a new line of high heel shoes with the air shock technology. Nike has hit on a key marketing opportunity. There are so few companies and brands that cater to the comfortable heel. If Nike can do this right and make the heels look normal while looking fashionable they are definitely going to be successful in the market. They already have the world recognizable brand name, and with the name Nike they can do anything they want. On a side note (esp. for all the shoe companies our there), bunions are nine times more common in women than men. A study by the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society found that 88 percent of women in the U.S. wear shoes that are too small and 55 percent have bunions. EHEM!!! HINT, HINT!!!

Super Skinny Models Banned from Madrid's Runways

blog%20pic-%20skinny%20model.jpg With the emergence of waif-like models like Twiggy in the 60’s and “heroin chic” bombarding the runways in the 90’s, super skinny is about all we see in fashion these days. Eating disorder activists have spent years targeting the fashion industry for it’s portrayal of emaciated and unhealthy looking women as what fashion is all about. Females young and old, no matter how impressionable they may be, often imitate what they see on the runway. Not to say that all models give young girls an unhealthy body image, but there is something to be said about the connection of skinny models and high fashion. For those of us hoping to see a little more weight on the runway this year, it seems like Spain is taking a step in the right direction. The people behind Madrid’s fashion week have decided to place a ban on overly-thin models at top-level fashion shows. A spokesperson for Madrid’s regional government, who sponsors the shows and imposed the new restrictions, has said that the fashion industry has a responsibility to portray healthy body images. About 30% of the models that participated in last year’s event have been turned away on the grounds that their Body Mass Index (BMI) is too low. An Italian newspaper reported that the mayor of Milan, Italy, Letizia Morratti, might also seek a similar ban on “sick-looking” models at Milan’s fashion shows. While we may see Madrid’s new restrictions as a healthy step, they’ve caused an outrage among modeling agencies. Cathy Gould, the North American Director of Elite modeling agency, believes that the fashion industry should not have to take the blame for illnesses like anorexia. “I think its outrageous, I understand they want to set this tone of healthy, beautiful women, but what about discrimination against the model and what about the freedom of the designer?” Gould also added that the new restrictions could potentially harm the careers of models who are just naturally rail-thin. Who knows if similar restrictions will be imposed in the United States, but in Europe, models might be able to start eating again.

Where Have All The Models Gone?

I recently opened Friday’s WWD, and the quote of the week was on Badgley Mishka’s choice of Sharon Stone as the face of the brand.

“She personifies what we always stood for with our collection,” said Mark Badgley.
I then thought about the many actresses who are now the faces of many high-end fashion brands. Jessica Simpson and Lindsay Lohan are on every cover of Elle, Glamour, and Cosmopolitan. Where have all the models gone?

Brazilian Supermodels: The Science Behind Gisele

gisele-bundchen-2.jpg

The enigma has been solved. Science has found the answer. No, not the cure for cancer; the reasoning behind the Brazilian takeover in the glamorous world of super models. I, like 99% of women, experience Gisele-Bundchen-envy (substitute Adrina Lima, Ana Beatriz Barros, Alessandra Ambrosio interchangeably) every time I put on a bathing suit. But I no longer curse God for bestowing the Victoria’s Secret Angels with heavenly proportions and me with back fat and cellulite. Turns out that God doesn’t necessarily like Gisele more than me, the leggy Brazilian bombshell, and her equally beautiful Brazilian sidekicks, can credit their mind boggling good looks to science.

Male Consumer Fashion Spending Is Up At Department Stores

Manity…I'm a man!? But am I Ubor or Metro? Macho or Mini? From Mars or Venus? Protector or Poser? Am I a Daddy Papi or Dandy, Guycumer, Mansclusive, or god forbid… a girly man!

Well, for those (fashionable) men who were at Olympus Fashion Week who didn't attend you should scan the report from the 'Ad Age' and 'Maxim' Man Conference. They checked the testosterone level of men and galvanized some of Pierce Mattie PR’s findings, that yes, Metrosexuality is dead (amen, I loved it for a few months in 2003) If you don’t live in New York or Los Angeles “forgetaboutit” and move on to other publicity strategies. Don’t think that we’re not consumers, in fact 58% of men polled in the survey spend more cash then they make every month. Yes we are still stupid. Purchases and spending is up for men 18-34 in clothing from department stores. Dispelling the myth that men only “mission shop” once a month. Good news to fashion labels, T-shirt designers and denim manufacturers.

When it comes to entertainment, marketing to men can be tricky. But Jeff Bell, VP-interactive entertainment at Microsoft, has a solution.

"The answer is control," Mr. Bell said during the "Boys and Their Toys" panel. "The more we relinquish control the better. We really need to present male consumers with both the right hardware and software so they can watch the content they want with less-spooky marketing."

That relinquishing of control and subsequent rise in user-generated content has been an emerging way to both engage consumers and shape the products being advertised.

Read Andrew Hampp’s article on Advertising Age for more details., They also have a video mash up with sound bytes.

Why wear a label, when you can wear art?

Areej%20Logo.jpg

Making its debut in America is Areej Creations, an Arabian clothing and sportswear line that features the art of Areej Turki. Entitled Brushstrokes, the collection consists of elegant, comfortable lounge wear with bold motifs from Turki's personal oil paintings. Because of the artistic influence, the collection is available in three different color palettes: blue, green and purple.

areej%20image.jpg

Brushtrokes will be featured in spas and resorts nationwide this fall/winter and is ideal for exercise, pilates, yoga, lounge wear and for running around town. “I am incredibly excited about Brushstrokes. Not only is it comfortable but it is fashionable. I want the women wearing it to feel beautiful while relaxing and enjoying being pampered, after all, that is what visiting a spa is about,” says designer, Areej Turki. Areej’s designs are characterized by her vibrant use of color and graphic themes that encompass a hybrid of sensuality and surrealism.

Areej Turki is an Arabian artist and designer with education from the United Kingdom and spends her time in Paris, Los Angeles and Riyadh. Turki has a strong background in Fine Arts and is constantly exploring the limits of her own creativity. While she is usually highly involved in interior decorating, advertising and publicity, currently fashion is her main focus. “I am looking forward to the success of this collection. I put a lot a heart and soul into the designing of these creations and I look forward to seeing them on women everywhere.”

Catwalk Closing

Looks like Fashion Week is being kicked out of Bryant Park as early as the fall 2007 shows in February. Why? Part of the reason is the decade long clash between Bryant Park and IMG, the owner of New York Fashion Week. Between the time it takes to set up, host Fashion Week, and then the break down the tents, the public has limited access to the park for several weeks. Also, over the years as Fashion Week has gotten bigger, it is starting to outgrow Bryant Park’s smaller location.

Despite the general public’s need for park time, the fashion world is fighting to stay in the park. “Nothing else is as good,” said Vogue’s Anna Wintour. She reportedly wrote to Mayor Bloomberg asking him to keep the shows in Bryan Park.

There is talk to moving the shows to Lincoln Center, a much larger location with some downsides. With the shows there, the New York Times reports that tents on opposite sides of the theater would require guests to walk a city block between shows.

I hope the shows don’t move – besides that the fact that it’s only a hop, skip, and a jump away from the Pierce Mattie Media Oasis, it’s been a long standing tradition since 1993 to have the shows in Bryant Park. IMG either needs to find a better location than Lincoln Center, or keep it in the park!

When Brand Names are Profane...

Have you ever watched a video on MTV and wondered why your favorite singer or rapper has a blurry spot on his/ her clothes, hat, shoes, etc? Don’t worry, there’s nothing wrong with your television. And no, there’s no wardrobe malfunction or profane picture… it’s simply the logo of a brand that didn’t pay the network an advertising fee for those few minutes of exposure. (I’ve got varying opinions on the practice, but I’ll get to those later.) The other night, as I watched the video for the song “Vans” by indie California-based group, the Pac, I noticed that the chorus was missing something. They never said the actual word “Vans”. Instead, the song says “got my _______ on”, and any lyric that contains a brand name is altered to have the brand removed. The brand names were actually treated like expletives! In most cases it would have slipped by me, and I would have assumed they were blanking out profane language. However, here, they’d chopped off the title lyric to the song! In fact, I’ve read reports that MTV refused to play the video unless the group sent in an edited version sans brands. I guess a brand name mentioned without add dollars is profane to a network whose success depends on advertising, huh? That means artists have to worry about their lyrics being censored not only by the FCC, but also by advertising reps and network execs.

Project Runway at Olympus Fashion Week 2007

My favorite television show of all time is Project Runway – hands down. Where has this show been all my life? I watch it religiously each week in anticipation with my eyes glued intently at the display of newly created fashions on my television monitor, all to be verbally glorified or trashed by reality TV’s most beloved fashion police swat team – Heidi Klum, Michael Kors and Nina Garcia. With an estimated viewership of over 3.9 million households, I was not surprised to learn that the Project Runway fashion show was the hottest ticket in town during Olympus Fashion Week 2007.
