Career Profile: Lance Buckley
There have been a lot of great things happening at Pierce Mattie PR over the past several months. Our fashion and accessories division seems to be multiplying in size daily, and the home division is going strong. I started to think back where the firm started and where we are now. "Wow!"Then I realized that my three year anniversary is right around the corner. I thought it only fair that I reflect back on the past few years.
I left another well known New York PR firm because I wasn't growing, and the lack of opportunitys. Since I joined the team at Pierce Mattie PR, I’ve gone from an account executive to a director, all while launching some major accounts. I remember my first day as though it were yesterday. It was a cool winter morning when I met up with Constance, another director at the firm. Immediately, I felt welcomed by her and our client, which I was helping to take around on a media tour that day. It was that warmness, something I didn’t expect, that has kept me here so long; that and the fact that it really feels like a home. I guess that’s because most of us have been here growing together over the past several years, unlike other firms who have a constant turnover in staff.
The clients I’ve worked with here have also been really great. I’m lucky enough to be able to come into the mix with many brands that are just starting out. It’s these clients that have a fresh outlook on PR that makes things so exciting! It’s fun to watch them take the media by storm and then see their brands make a connection with the consumer. It gives me as a publicist a since of fulfillment knowing that I had something to do with that. The diversity in clients also helps because you always have something new to pitch to the media. Working a lot with the men’s market, both with grooming and fashion labels, I must add that it is unbelievable how great the editors at the men’s books are. I’ve made so many good friends that I’ll have to take with me into my own writing career and throughout the rest of my life. Many of those I may never have met if not for my connections through the firm.
Did I mention the people? Aside from my colleagues, all of which hang out together outside of work on a regular basis, I must add that Pierce is one of the best bosses a publicist could ever hope for. I have no family in New York, and Pierce has always been there for me whenever I needed anything. He’s really there for each of us on a personal level. I get the sense that he would probably offer us the Gucci shirt off his back if we needed it. Even when you know he’s upset about something, you still have the immense respect for all he’s done. Oh, and if you’re ever stuck on something, all you have to do is ask him. He’s usually got an answer for everything, and he’s almost always right.
So, as my third anniversary approaches this December, I’ll be looking forward to what the next three years has in store. I can only imagine that there are many more exciting things to come. With offices in LA and Atlanta, maybe Pierce will send me over to London to open an international office. It’s not completely out of the question. Stranger things have happened.
