The 39th Annual Country Music Awards

The 39th Annual Country Music Awards were last night and boy were they great! I had the great fortune of being there to see it in person. People Magazine was gracious enough to give me seat in there personal booth with all the free food and beer you could ever dream of.

Last night’s Country Music Awards were very special as it was the first time the show has ever been held outside of Nashville and the first time ever in New York City. Previously the awards have been held at the famous Grand Ole Opry. It has been a long road getting the award show here and it went off without a hitch.

There were a couple big wins and a couple upsets. Lee Ann Womack came out as the big winner with three trophies including the biggie Album of the Year for “There’s More Where That Came From.” Keith Urban left with two trophies including Male Vocalist of the Year. Keith really deserved this and I wasn’t the only one thinking that. Every person was on there feet at Madison Square Garden when his name was called. Newcomer Gretchen Wilson walked away with Female Vocalist of the Year. Personally, I realize she’s generated the most album sales of the female genre but between herself and the other nominees, she’s lacking the most talent. I was disappointed to hear her name called.

Of course the best part of the night, was to see all the great country performances. Even some non-country folks stopped by to lend a hand. Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Elton John and Norah Jones were just some of the non country artists to show up and sing their hearts out. Memorable performances last night were few and far between though. Faith Hill and Tim McGraw’s duet “Like We Never Loved at All” sounded amazing. I think everyone was surprised to hear Faith sing as well as she did. She’s never sounded better.
Dolly Parton and Elton John’s duet of “Imagine” and “Turn the Lights Out When You Leave,” gave everyone chills. Knowing that two legends were on stage together singing in front of my eyes was all I needed for a great ending of a great night.

The move to NYC was a one time stint and the awards show will once again be held in Nashville next year for the 40th anniversary. At this time, Country Music doesn’t even have a radio station to call their own in New York City. Something has got to change here! All in all, this was a really fun night and I’m glad I was a part of it.
