Teens Walk a Mile in their Idols' Shoes, But at What Cost?

Ah, the teen years… full of flirting, finding yourself, and now, maybe falling on your face because you can’t walk in your skyscraper heels. In their quest to mirror their fave stars, girls are resorting to foot contorting measures. Long gone are my teen years, when baggy and boyish were the style du jour, and my idols, TLC and Aaliyah wore combat boots. Now, Beyoncé, Lindsay, and Gwen say high, thin heels are in. And what the fashion “Simon” says, those who don’t want to lose the game must do. Yes, chunkier styles have made a comeback, and everyone’s making cute flats, but we all know to truly be sexy, a shoe’s heel must be skinny. The amount of pressure those shoes put on the balls of our feet is enormous, and they’ve been shown to shorten hamstrings. Still I, like Keri Bradshaw and countless other women, can’t resist them. But what about those impressionable young ladies searching for their identities in the stars' shoe closets?

At the ripe age of twenty-something, I high-step with the best- any shoe with a heel lower than 3.5 inches is irrelevant unless it’s a sneaker. I even wore heels occasionally in high school, but those were the chunky, square heel days. I'm moved to wonder, however, with girls starting earlier and earlier to sport spindly stilettos on a daily basis, how much money they’ll be spending on podiatrists when they’re forty-something. This is especially true for those who can't afford the Manolos and Louboutins the see on red carpets and runways. Those shoes, with their hand-crafting and high quality are much less risky than less expensive counterparts. Many girls, however, are limited to the super-cute but not-so-comfy selections at Steve Madden, Bakers, and Aldo. Thankfully, there are tons of foot cushions on the market to alleviate some of the strain, pressure, and possibility of injury. One of the most comfortable is Earth Therapeutics CUSHIES foot cushions. At least now, if girls are going to follow in their heroes’ elevated footsteps, they can spare themselves some of the agony.
