Teenagers Look to Plastic Surgery for Increased Self-Esteem - Cosmetic Marketing

From reality television to provocative dramas, the plastic surgery field is catching the curiosity of people that have never even considered any type of body or facial modifications. With so much influence coming from the microscopic looks into the operating room, the minds of potential patients seem to be swaying more and more towards the knife. Even men are heading to their plastic surgeon’s office to tuck, stretch, pull and alter anything and everything. But let’s put aside adult men and women for a moment and take a sector of people that are, scarily enough, showing signs of being prospective patients.

Though teenage boys can’t legally put matters into the hands of the surgeons quite yet, a survey of 2,000 boys with an average age of 15 found that they are unhappy with their appearance and are as self-conscious about their bodies as girls. According to the British Journal of Developmental Psychology, 62% of these boys do not like their faces, while 68% do not like their teeth. A quarter of the boys surveyed said that they might consider plastic surgery, more than half of the boys said that they thought they were not attractive to girls and 80% of the boys said that getting into physical shape would improve the quality of life and make them happier. And males don’t have insecurities?

As frightening as it is, we realize that even boys become discreetly self-conscious very early in life. Through these statistics we understand how crucial confidence and self-appreciation is to a person’s development. If plastic surgery can make us happy and more confident then why are we so skeptical about its acceptance in society? Who are we to tell someone else what to do if they can walk out into the public and be comfortable in their own skin (even if it has been pulled from another body part).
