BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN- A RIP ROARIN' SUCCESS!

I had the privilege last night of being invited to Entertainment Weekly’s private screening of the brand new movie Brokeback Mountain, directed by Academy Award Winning director Ang Lee (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”) I have to say, I haven’t had a better time at a movie in a very long time. I was a little hesitant about seeing this movie as I was afraid it was going to be another coming of age gay love movie with the same plot lines and clichés. I was wrong.
Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) are two hired ranch hands that end up making an intimate connection while working on a Wyoming peak called Brokeback Mountain in the summer of 1963. Knowing that their relationship could have horrible consequences, they come down from the mountains and part ways.
Both marry and have children and try to lead “normal” lives. Jack in Texas and Ennis in Wyoming. Four years pass before they are able to reunite, and only then do they discover that their passion for each other is stronger than ever but too many obstacles forbid the union ever becoming a reality.
My favorite line in the movie, said by Ennis is “If you can’t fix it, you gotta stand it.” This one line sums up the core of the movie of this tragic love story.
Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger both have winning performances. Gyllenhaal is very consistent with his acting and always turns out a great performance but Ledger blew me away! If he doesn’t win some kind of award for this movie it will be an outrage. Performances by Michelle Williams (Dawsons Creek) and Anne Hathaway (Princess Diaries), turn out stellar performances as well. Ang Lee presents amazing direction and cinematography and the script by Pulitzer Prize winner Larry McMurtry is one of his best yet.
Never in one room have I looked around and seen women and their STRAIGHT boyfriends both crying. This isn’t just a movie geared toward homosexuals but reaches a broad spectrum. It touches on every emotion and by the end of the movie you are able to relate to their pain no matter if you are gay or straight. If you don’t go see this then you are missing out on one of best movies of the year.
