Beauty in Color?

What’s the allure of beauty magazines for women of color? I wonder sometimes as I sit and look through every fashion and beauty magazine on the stand; part of my job you know. While I love learning about new products, makeup, face and body products, hair sprays and serums it is a little disheartening that there are really no products in mainstream publications that talk to the ethnic American woman.

America, especially our metropolises is such a hodgepodge of cultures and the ethnic beauty and personal care industry currently rakes in upwards of $5.1 billion. It just triggers a bit of disappointment when I can’t look to my favorite magazine to find tips for my younger sister’s afro or treatments that address my cousin’s hyper pigmentation. I’m no fool, wrinkling is big business, but the adage that says “Black don’t crack” is alive and well. My grandmother is 86 years old and her skin is as smooth as it was on her wedding day. My mom doesn’t even know what a “crow’s foot” is, for goodness sake!

My beauty editor girlfriends insist that the difficulty begins with the inability to access the ethnic beauty products. Either they come from huge corporations with no specific person to speak with or very small companies who are simply shorthanded. Well, in response to their kind introspective comments, your favorite publicist and your favorite firm offers a solution. The Pierce Mattie Public Relations, Inc Ethnic Beauty Division is in full swing with clients in both the hair and color cosmetics sections. My sisters, the revolution will be editorialized!!! Look forward to learning about taming ‘fros, fading dark spots and finding the right shade of pink for your lovely brown skin!

Smooches, dolls!
