“These creams will NOT make a “fat” man skinny. In fact, these creams are formulated to achieve the “reduced appearance of subcutaneous local fatty deposits.” Topical transdermal fat reduction is questionable in regards to clinical real world efficacy. Localized tightening and firming of the area where the product is applied, is not only temporary, but also achieved solely when the individual applying the product is at their ideal body weight. The products should not be used on a person who is overweight and looking to lose weight.”

Permanent Makeup:An Evolution

Permanent makeup, also known aspermanent cosmetics, intradermalpigmentation ormicropigmentation, has beenpopular ever since the invention ofthe electric tattoo machine morethan a hundred years ago. In the1890s, New York societynewspapers reported that womenwere all looking very healthy due totheir tattooed cheek blush. In the1920s, London tattooist GeorgeBurchette wrote in his diary that hecould have made his whole living,if he had chosen to do so, from the“mole and blush business.” Ofcourse, he had very happy clients, since he mixed his pigments withcocaine for anesthesia.
Today, permanent makeup ismore popular than ever before, anddemand is continuing to grow.Thousands of women are enjoyingthe benefits permanent makeupwith the convenience of lookingtheir best and enhancing theirnatural features. Properly applied, permanent cosmetics should be asflattering and unobtrusive as soft, conventional cosmetics. It shouldmake a woman look her naturalbest, without calling attention toitself. You’ve probably seenpermanent makeup withoutnoticing it. If you’ve seenpermanent makeup and noticed it,you’ve likelyseen bad permanent makeup.Wouldn’t it be nice to wake upin the morning and be able to dressand run off to your daily activities? With permanent makeup, this hasbeen made possible. From eyeliner, eyebrows or lip shading, permanent makeup may be thesolution.
>Defined
Permanent makeup is theimplantation of pigment into thedermal layer of the skin via a coilmachine, which is a traditionaltattoo machine; a rotary pen; amotorized pen; or manually, theoldest method of tattooing. Allthree techniques are equally goodand safe if performed by a qualifiedand well-trained technician.Qualified professionals will followall universal precautions, usingsterile one-time use needles. Theyalso should answer any questions, show proof of training, be amember of a professionalorganization and provide a sizableportfolio to preview. Expectnothing less of your technician.Fortunately for the general public, the quality of the permanentmakeup practice also has improvedradically over the past severalyears, due to improvements inmaterials, techniques, machineryand higher standards being set fortraining in the industry.
>Pigments
The materials used in thepractice of permanent makeup haveimproved vastly over the pastdecade. In the early days, thehandful of “cosmetic” colorsavailable was not developed withan understanding of how thosecolors would heal into the skin, orhow they would look years later. As a result, many clients ended upwith pink or purple eyebrows andblue eyeliner when they wantedblack.Today, the industry has manysuppliers of quality pigmentsspecifically designed for the subtleskin and hair colors that are theprovince of permanent makeup.Subtle color choices are availablefor a soft natural look or to beaugmented with makeup to fit anyoccasion. You can always gothicker or darker at a later date.Less is more. Permanent makeupshould follow natural features andnever be trendy. It should age wellwith the face, when done properly. In fact, as you age, makeup shouldbecome subtler. Softer colors arefar more youthful than a made-uplook.In response to demand, manufacturers now all providecatalogues that will give anypermanent cosmetic technician anearly encyclopedic knowledge ofpigment composition and colorselection. Professionals now knownot only how to create predictableresults, but how to correct many prior poor results. Most permanentmakeup is done with iron oxidepigments. These are non-toxic totissue, non-irritating, stable to lightand long-lasting. Also, skin on theface in inherently thinner thanelsewhere on the body; therefore, adifference exists between body andface tattooing. For the most part, pigment is used on the face and inkis used on the body. Ink should notbe used on the face, because it iscarbon-based and the body canbreak it down.Permanent makeup bydefinition is a permanentprocedure. However, the reality is,color fades. In fact, touch work willbe needed to refresh the color ofprocedures in one to five years, especially on the face, which isexposed to more sun and skin careproducts. Needs may vary on anindividual basis, however. The biggest obstacle forpermanent makeup is the sun. Justlike a museum that does not allowflash photography, imagine whatthe sun does to cause fading, especially for lighter blonde colors. All light brow colors are mixedwith yellow. Yellow fades out ofthe skin the fastest. Blue stays inthe skin the longest. Its best toavoid any pigments with FD&C orD&C dyes. They are brighter, butthey can create an allergic reactionin some rare cases.
>Endless Options
Permanent makeup is ideal foranyone with an active lifestyle.Current clients range in age from18 to 95. It is ideal for anyone withseasonal allergies, contacts, personal limitations, an activelifestyle, or sparse eyebrows or lipsthat could appear fuller. With permanent makeup, natural shapes can be enhanced, acomplementary color added orlashes made to appear longer andthicker. Permanent eyebrow colorcan help maintain a desired shapeor achieve a softer look than pencilshaping. Lip liner and full lipshading can make thin lips orcrooked lips appear fuller and moresymmetrical. Also, natural lip colorcan be restored. It is not realistic toachieve a lipstick look withtattooing. One reason is the healedwork is viewed under your skin.Lipstick sits on top of the skin. However, beautiful, natural-lookingcolor can be achieved and you canchange your look anytime withlipstick. While full lips are a plus foreveryone, the eyebrows are a majorpart of expression. Enhancedeyebrows can mimic a natural face-lift, and eyeliner can brighten thewindow to your soul. In thesimulation of hair, technique is veryimportant. If the technician fills thebrow solidly with dots of color, oroutlines it and fills it solidly with ashading technique, it will looksolid, flat and artificial. If you aremissing brow hairs, they can besimulated very effectively with thenewer, hair-by-hair applicationtechnique. Be sure to ask yourtechnician if he orshe has experience in this method.Another wonderful feature ofcosmetic tattooing is for breastcancer survivors. After a unilateralor bilateral mastectomy, theareola/nipple area can be pigmentedto mimic a natural-looking breastmound. Many clients do not wantadditional surgery for areola grafts, especially because they often needto be pigmented, too. What apowerful way to help make awoman feel whole again. Anotherarea where techniques have evolvedis skin repigmentation. Any white, flat area of skin, such as a surgicalscar, can be repigmented withtattoo color to blend nearlyimperceptibly with the surroundingskin. Skin repigmenttation is done in a series of visitsusing thinned colors like watercolorwashes. In this way, color is built inthe skin in layers, and the healedresult retains a natural lookingtranslucency. It’s also been learnednot to camouflage darkdiscoloration with tattoo pigment, and those cases are referred to aphysician or skin care specialist.
>The Process
Permanent makeup is a multi-session procedure, taking anaverage of one to three sessions tocomplete the desired look. Mostpeople find the procedures verytolerable. There can be somediscomfort, swellingand irritation post procedure. The latest entry into the tattoomachine market is the digitallycontrolled machine, represented bysuch companies as HarmoniX andNouveau Contour. Both machinesuse a self-contained, disposableneedle and pigment cartridgeassembly, which eliminates anyrisk of pigment backflow into themachine hand piece. Thesemachines are powerful withoutbeing overly traumatic, reciprocateprecisely without lateral needlewobble and implant pigmentefficiently with less discomfort forthe client. They represent a realadvance in equipment technology, and are rapidly being purchased bytechnicians looking to upgrade theirequipment.“The latest entry into themarket is the digitallycontrolled machine.”No matter the method, it isimportant that clients understandthe healing process of permanentmakeup. Be sure to follow aprofessional’s advice for pre- andpost-care of all procedures.Permanent makeup artists alsoshould explain long-term care andanything that might prematurelyaffect makeup.
>Procedure of the Millennium
With better machinery, saferanesthetics, epinephrine enhancedgels, and more predictable colors, clients can now have permanentmakeup applied with real comfort, safety and beautiful results. However, the biggest variable inyour permanent makeup outcomeremains the artistic skill of thepractitioner whom you choose toapply it. Although credentials maylook similar on paper, allpractitioners are not cut from thesame cloth. The reality is thatpermanent cosmetic technicians aregraphic artists, working in themedium of the skin, like regulartattoo artists. Training materials arenow coming onto the market toraise the graphic awareness ofevery permanent cosmetictechnician. Meanwhile, it’s up tothe consumer to ask to see photosof the technician’s other clients andjudge for herself whether thetechnician has the taste and talentrequired to do the best job. Whenthe industry as a whole adds bettergraphic skills to the otherimprovements experienced over thepast decade, permanent makeupwill truly be the beauty procedurefor the new millennium.

Tea Time Drink to your health!

The United States imported about 519 million pounds of it last year. Singer Moby is going in to business peddling the substance in Manhattan. The Brits indulge inthis feel-good elixir way more thanthe average American who onlyconsumes one cup per day. TheBritish out-drink Americans 3 to 1… Tea, that is, good, old-fashioned,throw-it-in-the-Boston-Harbor, tea.Tea boasts a long and storiedhistory that spans the globe.According to legend that manyscholars believe to be fact, theChinese discovered tea in 2737 BC,when the wind blew some leavesinto a pot of boiling water that wasbeing prepared by the servants ofthe Emperor. The tradition of drinking teathen spread to Japan a few centurieslater, where it was made a ritual.Tea became popular in Europe, beginning in Portugal and Hollandbefore making landfall in theBritish Isles in the 1600s.Afternoon tea services became thefashion among noble women whoneeded something to get themthrough the day.
Even America had its influenceon the history of tea. The BostonTea Party was a symbolic protestfor “No taxation withoutrepresentation.” The late ’90s have seen upscale hotels such as the Ritz Carlton in Boston and Plaza Hotel in NewYork City re-establish the traditionof the Afternoon Tea Service. The Spa industry should take note of the results the hotel industry has experienced since promoting tea services. It draws the high-endclient, creates added value for current clients, generates publicity, utilizes existing amenities and space to increase profits, and introduces clients to other hotel services such as catering or events.Tea time may be as old as timeitself. However, it is a tradition that many Americans don’t fully appreciate. Everywhere you go in Europe, from Buckingham Palaceto a quaint sidewalk café in Slovenia, men and women are relaxing leisurely over a pot of tea. A relaxing respite quite unlike Americans who speed, brake andweave down the freeway, trying notto scald themselves with theirdrive-thru cup of java. Perhaps therest of the world knows the significant therapeutic benefits drinking at least three cups of tea every day provides.Tea is rich in powerful antioxidants called flavonoids that protect the body against free radical damage, which can encourage the development of diseases such ascancer, heart disease, stroke, rheumatoid arthritis, cataracts and Alzheimer’s.The amount and variety offlavonoids in each kind of tea isdifferent. The longer tea is brewed, the greater the amount of flavonoids. Many of the most common flavonoids pack more antioxidant punch than vitamins Cand E. In fact, tea is so rich inantioxidants, drinking three cups oftea gives the body as much antioxidant protection as six apples. The antioxidants in two cups of black tea are equivalent to the antioxidants in one glass of red wine or seven glasses of orange juice. Tea consumption is also animportant part of daily fluid intake to prevent dehydration. Fine lines, course texture and surface drynessare all challenges in skin care. If you didn’t already have enough reasons to drink more tea, this zero-calorie beverage will prevent chronic dehydration, which causes constipation, lethargy, headaches and has been linked to colon and breast cancer. Now, you may be thinking,“Doesn’t tea contain caffeine anddoesn’t caffeine cause dehydration?” The answer to both of those questions is yes. However, there is not enough caffeine in teato be diuretic unless you consume 5–6 cups of tea in one sitting, twice the daily-recommended serving.Tea can be more than just anantioxidant powerhouse. Tea is alsorich in fluoride. In fact, drinking three cups of tea will fill 70% of the body’s daily fluoride requirements. Drinking it, like 98% of the Britishdo, by adding milk, the amountsand types of nutrients added to yourdiet increase, giving you healthier bones and teeth. A variety of teas derived from different plants and originating from different parts of the worldhave found their way to the groceryaisle. There are three basic kinds oftea: green, black and oolong, whichis a combination of both.Green tea and black tea areboth derived from the camelliasinensis plant but are processed differently. Green tea is lightly steamed before drying and ispopular in the Far East. Black tea, which is fully oxidized, comesfrom Africa, India and Sri Lanka. The amount of flavonoids in greentea is roughly equal to that of blacktea, but the kinds of flavonoids aredifferent. Green tea contains simple flavonoids and black tea contains complex flavonoids. However, green tea and black tea both protect the body against disease such ascancer. Choosing one kind over theother is simply a matter of tastepreference.Green tea, which has a moredelicate taste, is traditionally the teaof choice in the Orient. Black tea isthe brew found in Europe and the Americas. In fact, 90% of the teaconsumed in the United States isblack tea. Many people associateteas with the blends of herbal teas, which are shoot-offs of these three types of tea. However, herbal teas, which are made from herbs, berries, seeds, and roots, actually containno tealeaves. The health benefits of tea havebeen well researched and widelypublicized increasing the brew’sconsumption in the Western world.Green tea contains anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. It is anti-thrombatic andlowers cholesterol. In animals, researchers have shown green tea, when imbibed or applied topically, prevents melanoma formationcaused from UV damage orchemical carcinogens. The researchin humans isn’t as conclusive, butpreliminary research appears tosupport that green tea has the sameeffect on human skin when eithertaken orally or applied topically.Researchers are alsoinvestigating green tea’s effect onweight loss. Again the results aren’tconclusive, but it appears that greentea increases fat oxidation therebyincreasing weight loss.In the last decade, spas havelead the way in the re-emergence ofholistic therapies. Ancienttraditions such as yoga, ayurveda, aromatherapy and organic foodsand beverages to balance the spirithave experienced a renaissance. These spas not only provide superlative face and bodytreatments, they recognize the needto promote the entire well-being.Eating right, exercising andreducing stress are just as importantin treating the skin as cleansing and exfoliation. Serving tea is one ofthe simplest ways a day spa canestablish its identity.Just as people associate teaservice with high-end hotels, theydo so with spas. The same womenwho go to the Ritz for afternoon teawill relish the experience at thesalon and spa level. She will not besatisfied with a cup of coffee in aStyrofoam cup. Like the Japanese, make an art of serving tea to yourclients. Use nice china, a Tiffany tea service, and beautiful silver.Make the tea and serve it ratherthan have a do-it yourself station.Create a special experience thatelevates your business into adifferent league. For thousands of years, peoplehave celebrated the benefits ofserving and drinking tea. Drinkingtea is good for the spirit and for thebody. Drink to your health...Drink tea!

Liquid Minerals with Jane Iredale
THE SKIN CARE MAKEUP
LIQUID MINERALS ™Liquid Minerals™ takes makeup as skincare to the next level!

Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, but what hits the eye of the beholder is light. Manipulating light reflection and refraction (scattering light) is the new key to younger, healthier-looking skin. Our light-diffusing, soft-focus minerals bases have always had this ability, now they are encapsulated with ingredients that can replenish the cellular layers of the epidermis.

A boon for all skin types, Liquid Minerals™ makes skin look more youthful, diminishes the appearance of lines and wrinkles, minimizes pore, evens out skin tone and adheres so well there is minimal transference.
You can immediately see and feel the difference in the look and health of the skin.
Time-Released Anti-Oxidants and Phytosomes
The beads or spheres visible in the airless pump are actually liposomes entrapping liposomes. This state-of-the-art technology allows us to encapsulate large amounts of active ingredients, which are then time-released on to the skin. This controlled and sustained release into the epidermis increases delivery by up to 40%.
At the center of the visible spheres lie minerals (mica, titanium dioxide, boron nitride and iron oxides), L-sodium hyaluronate acid (hyaluronic acid) and Olive Squalene all encapsulated by seaweed lipids. Floating around these larger spheres, like planets around the sun, are microscopic liposomes that individually encapsulate Coenzyme Q 10, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (Vitamins C), Vitamin K, Willow Bark Extract, Chamomile, Calendula, and Seaweeds (Algin, Agar and Carrageenan.)
The spheres are then suspended in a gel of aloe vera, lavender flower water and vegetable glycerin.
As the makeup is applied and worked into the skin, the body temperature breaks down the liposomes so that they can release their actives in a prolonged time-release action for the ultimate in skin health and protection. This formula has a natural pH of 6 and is so perfectly balanced that it needs no pH adjusters.
Airless Pump
This expensive but effective packaging ensures fresh, active ingredients without the necessity of synthetic preservatives.
Application
When the pump is operated is pushes the gel and liposomes through a screen which mixes them into a mousse. You may see what appears to be beading when you first begin the application. This is the liposomes breaking down. The mousse will soon smooth out. (The first pump of a new bottle may be clear. This is the gel clearing the tube. Just rub it into your hands. It’s good for them!)
Suggested methods of application are:
1. For a light coverage – Spritz the flocked sponge with D2O, pump a small amount of Liquid Minerals on to the hand or a spatula and pick up the mousse with the sponge, gently working it to help break the liposomes. Apply as you would a liquid makeup.
2. For a heavier coverage – Apply with a dry flocked sponge. (I’ve tried a number of applicators and I think our sponge does the best job of breaking the spheres and smoothing out the mousse.
3. For dry skin – Apply moisturizer before applying Liquid Minerals.
4. For oily skin – Apply without a moisturizer.
5. The loose or pressed minerals may be added on top for more coverage and/or sun protection.
6. Liquid Minerals grabs color more than the powders. Apply blush gently.
Glossary
GEL INGREDIENTS:
Aloe vera gel: Hydrating and soothing. The specifically formulated and purified aloe vera in our gel is less sensitizing than raw gel.
Lavender: Helpful for rapid healing and soothing. It stimulates new cell growth, fights infection and reduces inflammation. Also helps to balance oil production.
Vegetable Glycerin: Helps the skin to retain moisture due to its water-binding capabilities that allow it to draw and absorb water from the air.
MINERAL LIPOSOMES: (The following ingredients are encapsulated in one visible
liposome.)
Mica, Titanium Dioxide, Boron Nitride, Iron Oxides
L-sodium Hyaluronate: A natural protein that helps retain moisture in the skin. It can hold up to one thousand times its weight in water. As we age, the levels of hyaluronic acid diminish. Applying hyaluronic acid post-treatment will help make the skin feel soft and avoid dehydration and subsequent flaking.
Olive Squalene: An oxygenator and cancer fighter. It holds moisture to the epidermal lipid layer. Helps keep skin supple and smooth and guards against UV radiation.
ANTI-OXIDANT LIPOSOMES: (Microscopic liposomes containing individual
ingredients.)
Coenzyme Q10: A naturally occurring metabolic enzyme found in every living cell of the body. Used daily, CoQ10 helps prevent and reverse the aging process. It stimulates the vital energy necessary for skin cells to heal, protect and rejuvenate themselves. Tests show that: CoQ10 decreases DNA damage up to 70%. Significantly maintains the dermal matrix. Reduces wrinkle depth by 27%. Increases epidermal turnover and cellular renewal. Acts as a powerful antioxidant.
Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate: A stable derivative of ascorbic acid. Has been shown to suppress melanin formation. Has a protective effect against skin damage by UVB radiation. A good antioxidant and anti-inflammatory that can be used post-exfoliation, as it frequently has a less acidic pH than water-based vitamin C.
Seaweeds (Algin, Agar, Carrageenan): Have anti-inflammatory capabilities in addition to being nourishing and moisturizing to the skin. People who are allergic to shellfish should avoid these ingredients.
Vitamin K: Rosacea specialist, Dr. Geoffrey Nase has said: "Vitamin K has been the plastic surgeons' magical secret weapon for post-surgery bruising (damaged blood vessels). It has been shown to strengthen blood vessels (arterioles, capillaries and venules) in scientific studies. Small concentrations of Vitamin K added to your daily routine may have a very positive effect on under eye bags (swelling), under eye bluish color (dilated venules returning de-oxygenated blood) and red dilated arterioles that have not been structurally damaged."
PHYTOSOMES: (Microscopic liposomes containing individual plant extracts.)
Calendula (Marigold): Has soothing, antiseptic, anti-itching and anti-inflammatory properties. Effective for oily and/or delicate skin as well as for acne. Extract obtained from the calendula blossom.
Chamomile: Anti-inflammatory and antiseptic. Studies have shown that it reduces dryness, itching, redness and sensitivity in irritated and inflamed skin. Extract obtained from the flower heads.
Willow Bark Extract: Outstanding anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. In addition to reducing redness, it has long been thought to be helpful in healing wounds and reducing the pain associated with burns. Native to the forests of the Yukon Territory in Canada as well as northern Europe and Russia.

Dry Skin
Almost all of us experience dry skin at some point in our life. Although some of us are born with a tendency to dryness, it's possible to experience a temporary bout due to a change in the weather, pregnancy, stress or ill-health. Simply sitting in an overheated environment can leave skin sapped of moisture. The best way to cope is with gentle, nourishing products that will leave skin feeling hydrated and comfortable again.
What is dry skin?
Technically, dry skin is a condition caused by a lack of moisture in the top layer of skin, the stratum corneum, combined with a breakdown of the protective barrier of oils and keratin in the deeper epidermis. When the moisture-content level falls below five per cent, the skin becomes dehydrated and tight. Dry skin is normally fair and sensitive with no open pores and a dullish appearance. It may develop wrinkles and lines at an early age if not kept supple, especially around the mouth and eyes.
How you know if you have dry skin
The most telling signs of dry skin are a feeling of tightness 10 to 15 minutes after washing, having dull or rough, red, flaky or scaly skin, having fine lines, and there being no visible shine, even by the end of the day. The skin can look thin and papery and is also prone to broken veins.
What causes dry skin?
Dry skin is caused by a low level of sebum production. It is exacerbated by wind, extremes of temperature and air-conditioning. As we age, the condition often worsens because sebum production naturally slows down and the skin becomes thinner (which allows moisture to escape more easily). Look at your diet, too. A lack of essential fatty acids (EFAs) can cause skin to become papery and dry. If you have a hot bath and the skin on your body still feels dry after an application of body lotion, you might not have enough EFAs in your diet.
Balance skin from within
Eating a balanced diet and, if necessary, taking appropriate supplements, is a vital part of creating a healthy complexion. Bear in mind that it takes a good three weeks for newly formed cells to reach the skin's surface, so it takes time for lasting results to show. Vitamins A, C and E, selenium and zinc are essential antioxidants that help to enhance collagen repair and generally promote skin healing. Essential fatty acids (EFAs) can also have a positive effect on skin as they form a barrier that prevents moisture loss that helps combat dryness, fine lines and wrinkles.
What to avoid if you have dry skin
Dry skin needs ultra-gentle care. Treat it well and it won't give you cause for concern. Avoid:
Harsh cleansing Washcloths, hot water, dry saunas and skincare products containing soap can dry and irritate the skin.
Extreme weather The wind and sun can both lead to dryness and even chapping. Indoors, be wary of air-conditioning and overheating.
Granular exfoliants Irregularly shaped grains (made from peach stones or sand) are too rough and can cause broken blood vessels.
Astringent toners Alcohol tends to overstrip the skin.
Clay masks Clay and mud products soak up oil and leave skin drier.
The best skincare routine for dry skin
Although dry skin can become temporarily oilier in hot weather (just switch your moisturiser to a slightly lighter one), it will usually benefit from the following care:
Use a gentle lotion or cream cleanser that can be rinsed or tissued off. Foaming gel cleansers are too drying.
If you want to use a toner, choose an extremely gentle one (such as rosewater).
Look for a moisturising lotion or cream containing hyaluronic acid (which helps your regular moisturiser attract more moisture into your skin), jojoba oil or shea butter. Apply it to damp skin for better absorption, then gently rub it in for increased penetration.
If you have dry skin, only use scrubs made with smooth, synthetic grains to buff away dead skin cells. If you prefer chemical exfoliators, look for beta hydroxy acid (BHA) products, as they are gentler than alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) products. Exfoliate no more than twice a week.
Rich, nourishing night creams can work overnight to quench parched skin.
As an occasional treat, try a moisturising mask that doesn't set on the skin. Look for nourishing ingredients such as vitamin E or collagen.

Energy Medicine: ThePower of Information
“Kineseology is atechnique and technologyfor enhancing human perception.”
When most people hear the termenergy medicine, they have onlythe vaguest notion of what thismeans. It would surprise many tolearn that the field of energymedicine is a cutting-edge sciencethat today pushes the envelope ofwhat is possible in the technologyof health and healing. Sometimesreferred to as vibrational healing orelectronic medicine, it has—foralmost a century—paralleled thedevelopment of mainstreammedical science. It is the technology of using information to heal.
Word Power
A single unkind word can havea profoundly debilitating effect, justas a word of encouragement canwork wonders. To use a computeranalogy, consider a moderncomputer that is malfunctioning. The technician sent to fix it wouldmost likely do so by introducingnew information into the computerto replace information that has beencorrupted, lost or inadvertentlydeleted. Only rarely would theproblem be caused by brokenhardware. Applying this logic, many human health problems canbe viewed as pathological orstressful information at work in thesystem. Change the informationand the problem is fixed. Everyonehas in some way been effectedpowerfully by a sight, a sound or abit of music. The recent advent andavailability of personal computershas fueled a quantum leap inelectronic medicine. So profoundare these new technologies, that itwill come to change the very notionof what is possible in healing, aswell as what it means to be healthy. There are two basic ideas tounderstand. First, is the side of thetechnology that providespractitioners with enhanceddiagnostic capabilities. Calledelectronic kineseology, this is atechnique and technology forenhancing human perception so thatthe patterns of disease can bedetected and potential medicinescan be matched to those conditions. The second is the aforementioneduse of electronically composedinformation as medicine. It is thecombination of these abilities andtechnology that makes electronicmedicine so effective.
How it Works
The energy medicinepractitioner connects the client toinstrumentation, which can be ahardwire hookup, or the analysiscan be done on a viable tissuesample like hair. Using electronickineseology, the practitioner getstactile feedback from theinstrument. The operator can feelthe greater or lesser levels ofenergy or stress in the client’ssystem. The instrumentationquantifies and records this. Whenenough analysis has been done forthe practitioner to comprehend theclient’s problem, the neededelectronic medicine is composed.“The advent of computershas fueled a quantum leapin electronic medicine.”This is a considerable departureand enhancement of the traditionalpractice of medicine, both Westernand alternative. In the traditionalmodel, everything depends on acorrect diagnosis. Once the correctdiagnosis is made, the physiciansimply administers the prescribedmedicine for that condition. If theeffect is not the desired one, thephysician simply goes to the nextmedicine on the list. In theparadigm of electronic andenergetic medicine, the only valueof the diagnosis is to enlighten thepractitioner as to the nature of theclient’s condition.Armed with this understanding, the practitioner uses creativity, skills and gifts in the compositionof the electronic medicine. Safety isvirtually 100% as the practitionercan test the composed electronicremedy for efficacy and possibleside effects before it is given to theclient. If necessary, the remedy isedited to eliminate any problems.
A hypothetical example ofenergy medicine can bestdemonstrate the possibilities asthey exist today. “John” is not sickexactly. At 58, he feels he does nothave the energy to keep up with thefast pace of business or his secondwife, who is younger. John feelsold and looks even older. Hisregular physician has given him aclean bill of health but says heworks too hard and needs morerest. Feeling that is not an option,he visits an alternative medicalpractitioner who employs electronicmedicine.“Kineseology is atechnique and technologyfor enhancing humanperception.”Upon arriving at thepractitioner’s office, John is askedfor a small hair sample fordiagnostic purposes, fills out arequired standard form and waits. He is then ushered into a treatmentroom where he sits beside a largedesk occupied mostly with acomputer and other electronicequipment he does not recognize. After introductions, the practitionerasks him basic questions about hiscondition and his reasons forcoming to see him. Soon thepractitioner is using graphicdisplays on his computer screen topoint out several areas of highstress in John’s endocrine system. These, he believes, are the chiefculprits of what he describes aspremature aging. After repeatinghis other physician’s advice to getmore rest, the practitioner brings upother screens on his computer. Ashe works, the practitioner explainsto John that he is composingelectronic medicine to counter thestress found in the energetic test, aswell as to boost and balance hisendocrine system. After a final keystroke, thepractitioner says that hisprescription of electronic medicinehas beene-mailed to his home computer. Heexplains that on returning home,John need only click on theelectronic medicine icon to receivehis treatment of coded light, soundand geometry. He tells John tofollow the instructions that willaccompany his electronic remedyand to contact him again if he needsfurther help. As John leaves theoffice, he notes that the entire visithas taken less than 30 minutes.Upon returning home, heeagerly sits down at his computerto check his e-mail. The messagefrom the practitioner contains thegraphic printouts of his diagnosticreadings along with thepractitioner’s comments andexplanations. At the end is theelectronic medicine icon. He clickson it and a screen appears thatexplains that he should experiencehis treatment each evening for fivedays. He clicks the start button.Strange electronic music begins toplay in time with swirling colorsand geometric forms. As themelodic sequence progresses, hefeels as though the swirlingenergies are moving within him, asif each note sounds in a slightlydifferent part of his chest. Theprogram stops after what seems asthough it has taken only a fewseconds, but it has been three and ahalf minutes. John smiles and putshis hand to his chest. It feels warm.John’s experience is madepossible by technologycommercially available today thatmost people would have troublebelieving in—the efficacy of thistechnology is only human. Afterall, most people do not believebecause they have checked with topexperts in the field. They believe inthose things they and others haveexperienced.
Ahead of Schedule
Energy medicine has thepotential to radically transform theindustry. It has, in fact, alreadybegun to do so. Many cosmetics, supplements and fitness productsare altered or created outright bytechnologies similar to those foundin energy medicine. The future is ahead of schedule.

Spa Design: Savvy and Sophisticated
When it comes to spa design, thereare many things to consider, eachwith it’s own role in the successfuloperation of most spas of today.Successful spa design requiresachieving a balance among theguest experience, techniciancoordination, profitability andtrends. The look, the feel and, ofcourse, the practical use of the spamust all be in harmony to make itall work. When it all comestogether, then spa owners canproudly serve their guests, providefor their staff and expect a decentreturn on their investment.
> Guest Experience
Today’s spa-goers are raisingperformance expectations. Theyhave very little tolerance for poorservice. The problem is that whenexpectations are not met, mostclients generally do not give thefeedback directly, they simply donot return. So, it is critical tounderstand their expectationsbefore they enter the spa. A fewexpectations in relation to interiordesign and layout considerationsare key.Privacy. Privacy is a very bigissue for most spa-goers. They arevery conscious of the fact that theyare wearing only a robe and, generally speaking, they are lyingnude on a table under blankets andwraps. Even prior to arriving to thetreatment room, they had to removetheir clothing in order to put on therobe. Privacy must be considered atall vulnerable points in theexperience, including privatechanging rooms, proper placementof doors to the treatment room, private showers and, most of all, anyone in a robe should be relaxingor waiting only with others inrobes. Those who have not yetbegun their service should have aseparate waiting room.Cleanliness. The spa must bedesigned in a way that makes iteasy to keep clean. If it is clutteredor dirty, rest assured, clients willnot come back. Be sure to include asmall janitor closet and a storageplace for soiled linens. The Unexpected. There arenow thousands of spas in theUnited States, and let’s face it, atreatment room is just about thesame in all of them. Think aboutwhat it is about your spa that can becreatively different to influence theclient’s experience and make itunique to your spa.
>Technician Coordination
Additional considerations relateto technician coordination. Everyteam member is “on-stage” when ina public area of the spa. This meanseveryone always has to be on task.Practical Applications.Nothing is more frustrating fortechnicians than to be working inan environment incongruent to thetask that they are assigned tomaster. If the treatment room is toosmall, it raises the level ofdifficulty to meet the guest’sexpectations. If the flow of the spais off balance, then processes areinefficient and more timeconsuming. In addition, theappointment team should not becramped in a small room.Encourage a state-of-mind that willfoster a selling mode for up-sellingservices and pitching giftcertificates.
>A Getaway.
There should besomewhere for the technicians toget “off-stage.” Of course, thisshould not be next door to a quietmassage room where a guest canoverhear what is being said. This isa place for their belongings, as wellas a break room. Many times thisarea is multi-functional as adispensary, break room, employeelocker room, laundry room, etc.
>Profitability
There is no question that profitability is influenced by theoverall design of the spa. In order to achieve a successful balance inthe design, it must be understoodwhere the profit comes from in thespa. It is not always the same—profit centers aredetermined by the type of spa and the market in which the spa islocated. What is true for a day spain Manhattan is not necessarily truefor a day spa in Columbus, Ohio, just as a Canyon Ranch is differentfrom a Marriott.
>Retail sales.
A day spa is verydependent on retail sales. The trendin day spas seems to be moving tofocused applications; spas that have15 different manufactures withhundreds of products on the shelfare becoming extinct. The reason issimple: it is not working. It is hardto train the staff on so many lines, and it is difficult for the client towork through too many options. And the design team can seamtogether that many attitudes.Today’s spas are being designed asnot only a service delivery center, but also a key element incontributing to the client’s lifestyle.A more sophisticated approach tothe retail center has evolved itsdesign from glass shelves on a wallto a full-scale retail concept.Increasingly, a trend to a concepttype of strategy in the spa with asingle focus in product, whetherthat is a brand name product or aline specifically designed for thatparticular spa, as well as purposefuldisplays—both wall type andgondola type. Lighting designs area big part of the overall retaildesign to bring attention to theproduct and the displays.
>Space utilization.
Anothermajor player in profitability indesign is space utilization. Balancemust be achieved between wastingspace and cramping the flow. Oneguideline is to create revenue-producing opportunities every 200square feet. This is an average andis adjustable depending on theindividual circumstances of the spa.
>Trends
Driven by market conditionsand the learning curve of applyingmistakes made as the industryevolves, the trends in spa designhave rapidly changed over the past10 years. As the spa industryrapidly evolves, it makes for amuch more interesting approachand certainly creates the need for amore challenging design. The interior design allows agreat opportunity to set the spaapart, creating a point ofdifferentiation. Smart linescombined with interesting designflair will stand out in clients’ mindsand give them something to talkabout. Of course, water is found inso many spas, a feature that can betruly fun and exciting. However, without question, oneof the major trends is making surethat the look and feel of the spa willmake male clients comfortable.Men are currently 28% of spaclients. This is up from 24% justtwo years ago. Interior designs areno longer cushy and fluffy; instead, they feature clean lines, warmcolors and a streamlined look toappeal to men and women. The latest trend in interiordesign is the merging of themedical and spa industries. Medicalfacilities are no longer a clammyand stainless look. They are high-end, streamlined designs that have avery inviting feel, while at the sametime putting forth the message oflifestyle and tradition. Many designers also aremoving back to a more traditionalstyle in spa design. Certainly, someof the newer technologies play arole, but in many cases there is asimple feel to the look andfunction. This, of course, transcends itself to the clients andputs them into the spa state-of-mindright away. Many designers havedeveloped some truly remarkablespas. They have made the spa arelaxing place for the guest bothvisually and aesthetically. The staffcan master their duties throughoutthe facility with routine and ease. When it all comes together, spaowners can proudly serve theirguests, provide for their staff andexpect a decent return on theirinvestment.

Beauty Make Up Tips
Make Up "color" should be used to help you look good and feel better. Once you find your own basic make-up essentials to create a radiant-looking complexion and then experiment with different colours, textures and cosmetic items to accentuate your features and enhance your face. Improving your appearance will boost your confidence and self-esteem.
Lip Glass
clear or tinted, can be worn alone to create a natural sheen or over lip colours for a lacquered finish.
Lip Liner
should be used primarily to shade rather than outline the lips. It also acts as a great fixative for lipstick.
Pencils
are a must for defining eyes and shaping brows. Always look for a soft pencil which will glide along smoothly.
Nail Polish
whether in neutral or bright colours, gives a well-groomed look.
Colour Correctors
can be used if you have problems such as broken blood vessels or a ruddy complexion which cannot be covered with a normal concealer.
Lip Stick
whatever the shade, can help protect the lips, provided that it contains a sun protection factor and hydrators.
Concealer
in a retractable stick will give better coverage and last longer than creamy formulations. Look for a shade with a yellow undertone to suit your skin tone.
Loose Powder
must be super-fine to ensure it creates a ‘barely there’ finish and looks as natural as possible once applied.
Pressed Powder
is ideal for retouches when you’re on the move and is easy to apply, so it goes just where it’s needed.
Foundation
is essential to smooth the skin and disguise imperfections. Dry skin needs a creamy formulation and oily skin will benefit from an oil-free compact or liquid foundation. For superior coverage, choose a liquid or stick foundation.
Tinted Moisturizer
is great if your skin requires minimal coverage and you find foundation too heavy. In the summer choose one with a sun protection factor.
Mascara
accentuates the lashes, helping to frame the eyes. For the best results, two fine coats are better than one single, heavy-handed application.
Liquid Eye Liner
is essential for transforming daytime make-up into a glamorous evening look, but it does require precision application.
Eye Shadow
in striking, slightly shimmering tones, applied with a light hand, can give the face an air of luminosity. Beauty Intelligence
Customblending
mix cosmetics to create new colours and textures
Blushing Faces
If your summer blusher does not suit your paler winter face, dip the loaded blusher brush into translucent powder before dusting on. Create your own blusher by mixing a small amount of lipstick with face cream on the back of your hand and then dab on to the cheeks. Alternatively, dot a creamy lipstick on to the cheeks and gently blend into the skin.
In The Mix
You can mix existing products to create new colours and textures. To combine different lipsticks, either mix on the back of the hand using a lip brush or chop up the colours, place in a small dish and heat gently in the microwave for a couple of seconds, or until the lipsticks turn into a liquid. Pour into a palette and leave to set, before painting on with a brush.
Powder Play
To blend loose face, eye or cheek powder, simply place in a bowl and mix together thoroughly using a spatula. For a foolproof way to blend them, place in an air-tight container with a lid and shake vigorously. Pressed powders are best mixed on the back of the hand, using your fingertips or a make-up brush; or crush them together with a palette knife.
Perfect Shade
Dark skin does not always have an even tone all over, so it can be difficult to find one single shade of foundation. Make-up artists recommend investing in three shades which are close to your natural skin tone and then mixing and matching these until you create the perfect colour combination to suit the different tones on your face.

19 Stay-Young Forever Secrets
Want to look 19 forever, gorgeous and glowing? Well, prepare to get carded! Our 19 stay-young secrets will put time on your side.
BEGIN WITH A GLIMMERING GRIN
1. Swear off foods that stain -- anything with a dark pigment, such as red wine, soy sauce or steak will make your teeth not so pearly white. Instead, chomp on apples, carrots and cucumbers; the cellulose in their skins and their slightly acidic compositions actually cleanse teeth.
2. Pick a whitening toothpaste with fluoride to help prevent decay. Can't brush after a big meal? Chew sugarless gum with a whitener for 20 minutes. Recent studies suggest it reduces plaque by 20 percent.
3. Wear Crest White Strips for 30 minutes twice daily, and your teeth will be significantly whiter after two weeks. For a professional smile, ask your dentist about in-office bleaching treatments like Zoom. The hour-long procedures range from $500 to $1,000, but results last more than three years.
BABY YOUR SKIN
4. Have your sun fun, but get defensive with a daily SPF on any exposed skin--even in the dead of winter. "Harmful UV rays speed up the aging process," warns Steven Victor, M.D., a New York City dermatologist. "Although olive- and dark-skinned women commonly age between five and 10 years more slowly than those with fair complexions and blue eyes, sunscreen is crucial for preventing wrinkles, blotches and uneven color in all tones," he adds.
5. Get glowing with top-to-toe exfoliation three times a week and use a heavy night cream all over. "Skin this with age, resulting in a drier, duller surface with rough and flaky patches," explains New York City-based cosmetic dermatologist Deborah Sarnoff, M.D.
TAKE A BITE OUT OF TIME
6. Green tea time! The soothing beverage helps boost the quality of skin's elastic tissue, according to a recent study at Stanford University School of Medicine in Stanford, California.
7. Stock up on antioxidants. Vitamin C, vitamin E and beta-carotene found in foods like tomatoes, squash and carrots protect cells from the ugly effect of oxidation (think the weathered-leather look).
8. Pass the olive oil. It's loaded with natural chemicals that may help prevent age spots.
WORK IT OUT
9. To beat the bulge that creeps up with age, Chase Taylor, personal training manager at Equinox Health Club in New York City, recommends a minimum of four 20-minute session of cardiovascular exercise weekly. "If you really want to see results, vary your routine [walking, rowing, running, biking] every six to eight weeks and bump up your cardio to 30 to 40 minutes," says Taylor. Consult your physician before starting a new exercise routine.
10. Pump iron to build bone density, increase muscle mass and fight osteoporosis. "Life a weight you can do manageably for 10 to 12 reps - if it's not challenging enough, increase the weight," says Taylor. Bonus: Getting tight and tones also reduces the appearance of cellulite.
DO THE RIGHT THING
11. Restore your locks' youthful luster. "Hair dehydrates with age," explains Philip B., creator of Philip B. Botanical Hair Care. To get make your mane beautiful again, use a hot-oil treatment weekly, and massage a deep conditioner into your scalp to replenish the moisture.
MAKE UP THE DIFFERENCE
12. Give skin a moist, dewy finish instantly with a brightening product (Revlon Skinlights Face Illuminator, $14; drugstores, or Trish McEvoy Kin Illuminze, $35; 800-431-4306), which can be worn under or over foundation.
13. Lids a little droopy? Slightly tilt eyeliner at the outside corners of the eyes and add a wash of highlighter along the brow bone. Use an eyelash curler and volumizing mascara for a bonus boost.
14. After 25, lips begin to thin. Plump up your pout using a neutral pencil to line, and fill them once you've prepped with a balm. Polish 'em off with a moisturizing lipstick that contains an SPF.
FACE THESE FACTS
15. Prominent pores a problem? Hormonal changes in the 20s and 30s cause them to enlarge, making the complexion appear rough and uneven. Use oil-blotting papers and toners with ingredients like chamomile and witch hazel to temporarily swell the skin around the pores, which makes them seem smaller.
16. Seeing spots? At 30, signs of past sun damage may begin to creep up in the form of freckles. Dose the dots with an over-the-counter bleaching cream or talk to your dermatologist about a prescription containing hydroquinine or last treatments.
17. Laugh lines making you frown? Forehead creases giving you a headache? Talk to your doctor about injectables like Botox, Restylane or collagen.
LAY IT ON THOSE LINES
18. Moisture is the key to keeping your eyes looking young and alert! Perk up your peepers with a dab of eye cream twice daily. Avon Anew Ultimate Eyer Cream, $22; avon.com.
19. Treat wrinkles, brown spots and stretch marks with a doctor-recommended dream cream.

Hair Facts
Hair is "dead" as it leaves the scalp. However it does have physical properties such as elasticity and tensile strength. Weight for weight, hair is stronger than steel.

Each HAIR is composed of three structures:
1. the cuticle - the outer covering
2. the cortex - forms the inner bulk of the shaft
3. the medulla - formed by small, central air spaces of little significance in humans
Hair Stucture
•The cuticle is the external protective cover of the hair shaft and is composed of overlapping 'tile' like scales with their edges towards the tip of the hair. They are responsible for how our hair feels and looks.
•As the hair grows away from the scalp the cuticle is subjected to "wear and tear" which may reduce its shine and feel.
•The Cortex is composed of long compressed, adjoined but dead cells and is responsible for the longitudinal properties of the hair. Loss of these properties may be due to severe or accumulated damage.
•There are some 100,000 - 150,000 hair follicles on human scalp. The actual number is determined, for each of us, by the time we are born - no new ones grow after this. Often more than one hair is seen growing out of the same opening on the scalp surface.
•Hair grows continuously, at approximately 1cm per month, for up to 7 years. Rarely this can be longer and hair can almost reach the ground.
•The length of time hair grows in women tends to be longer than in men.
•Grey hairs can start growing from the age of 16 and this is almost always genetically determined. They tend to be thicker than pigmented ones. See Colour Covering grey, which is a sign of ageing, is one of the commonest reasons to use colour.
•Normal hair growth is controlled by our genes and hormones (after puberty). Female hormones (oestrogen) tend to make hair grow longer and thicker (as in pregnancy). Hair follicles on the top of the head (but not the back) which are receptive to male hormones (adrogens) may produce gradually shorter and thinner hairs leading to male pattern baldness.

Veggie oil-based hair care products.(Science Update)
Most of today's hair gels benefit from the holding power of synthetic polymers. When the gels are applied, the main ingredient--water--evaporates, leaving a thin film around the hair strands, helping to keep them in place. Research has shown that it's possible to get the same kind of hold with lipid compounds derived from soapstock, an underused byproduct of oilseed processing. These lipid compounds are usually hard to recover because they degenerate through oxidation and are wasted. Now there's a way to reclaim the valuable compounds and treat them so that they maintain their useful properties.
Gels have been created from safflower and soybean soapstocks. Lab tests show them to work well on a variety of hair types. They would be relatively inexpensive to produce, since soapstock costs only a fraction of the price of synthetic polymers. Efforts are under way to find a manufacturer interested in collaborating on this research.

No Summer Fading!!!

No Fall Fading!!!
by pierce mattie
Summer is here and the sun is strong, bronzed bodies are in season. Worried about how to keep a golden glow without hitting the beach?
Head to the beds! The tanning beds, of course. Unsure of how many minutes you should roast, or if you should tan in a high-pressure or low-pressure bed? What about these tingle factor and hemp seed products?
According to Steve Channey at The Smart Tan Network you will need three things in order to tan - UVA, UVB and Oxygen. The acceleration of various lotions will play a key component in your skins ability to absorb the UV rays.
Step One
The Base Tan
Supre Tattoo Dark Tanning Serum $45.00 1-800-825-7020 supre.com
This is a luxury, first class tanning serum. Its featured antioxidants nourish the skin while ordenone helps to eliminate those stinky odors that linger post-tanning. Vitamin D, zinc, copper and iron mineral compounds increase the skins’ capacity to have a deeper, dark tan.
Step Two
The Trippin’ Tan
California Tan X Power aka XTC (X-Treme Tanning Catalyst)
(8 fl. oz) 212-337-0020 $68.00 www.spasun.com
This lotion is infused with CUO2. Copper peptides and oxygen are melted into the rich lather to encourage the skin to absorb more nutrients and proteins and provide longer, stronger tanning.
Step Three
Greaseless Beefcake Tan
If you’ve reached the edge, try American Tan Plateau Oil. Its dry, oil-like feel is perfect for guys with or without body hair. Plateau Oil contains Unipertan and Tyrosinate to accelerate even the darkest tans.
Step Four (only for experienced tanners)
Hot Hearts Tan
Ultimate BioFusion Power Shot ($24.00 at 1-800-230-5955) ultimatenyny.com
Move over tingle! If your lotions leave you bored, hit the beds with Power Shot BioFusion by Ultimate. This product is so intense you have to mix it with a base lotion because it cannot be applied directly to bare skin. Try the Ultimate Revolution or Spy. Also $24.00.
Once you have completed steps one through four and have gone beyond your base brown and through the advanced plateau stage, get ready to vary your products.
If you want a:
The Peppermint Paddy Tan
Cooling with a tingle: Try Chocolate Ice by Hollywood Tans with a tingle factor 15 $55.00 Have you ever noticed you always get a better tan if you’re exercising outside, rather than just laying on a beach towel? Hollywood Tan points out the reason is because you are stimulating blood flow, increasing oxygen levels and allowing the tanner to oxidize melanin at a faster rate which produces better tan results. Chocolate Ice’s tingle factor stimulates blood flow, increasing tanning capabilities.

Stoned and Chillin’ Tan
Hemp without a tingle: Smooth Softie by Caribbean Gold
Based in THC free hemp, it adds moisture to the skin that better reflects light in the bed. Also enriched with blue algae to prevent fine lines and wrinkles. This product holds 40 times its weight in moisture so your body can forget about going dry. Scented in cucumber and melon. $10.00 1-800-225-8268 Pacific Tanning Supplies.
The Exotic, Erotic Tan
Pierce’s Pick of the month: Black Tea by Technique Labs
Teas contain polyphenol antioxidant compounds that help block the formation of skin tumors, which is why Technique Labs chose Black Tea as a main ingredient. The chemicals go to work once they are exposed to UV light. Black Tea Extract has been shown to have excellent healing properties and is enriched with Polyphenol Anti-Oxidant compounds to help protect the skin. Technique Labs’ Black Tea product also has a bronzing complex that allows tanners of all skin types to enjoy a natural, radiant golden-brown color. Special skin conditioners, humectants and Copper give the skin a more hydrated and firmer appearance. The scent is so yummy you could eat it. 888.643.8826 $35.00
Difference between a high-pressure bed and a low-pressure bed
High-pressure vs. low-pressure beds
Low-pressure beds use florescent lamps, (100 to 220 Watts)
High-pressure means there is more UVA and higher air pressure in the bulb (300 to 2, 2000 Watts)
How many minutes should you go in for?
According to Michael Stepp, CEO of Wolf Tanning Beds, ask your tanning operator at the salon what is the maximum time permitted in the bed. For example if it’s 20 minutes, then start out only going in for four minutes on your first three to four sessions and then increase it to eight minutes continuing in four minute increments, until you reach 20 minutes. If you lose your color or stop tanning you have to start over again, once you have reached your peak go once a week for maintenance. Hollywood Tans suggests cutting the maximum time in half and then subtract one to three minutes off of that time if you are prone to burning.
Pierce's word of caution
The FDA recommends waiting 48 hours to tan between each session.
You MUST wear protective eyewear when tanning indoors.
UV exposure can lead to skin cancer and skin aging.

CIDESCO INTERNATIONAL SET TO EXPAND AGAIN
International Beauty Therapy pace-setters CIDESCO, are set to expand in 2004, according to President Helene Bramwell.
Ms Bramwell said the organization, which is now represented in 34 countries, had received interest from a further three new countries wanting to affliliate next year.
“There are growing applications to establish more CIDESCO Sections and of course CIDESCO accredited beauty therapy schools and salons almost everywhere in the world,” she said.
“Our European, American and Australasian membership is growing at a rapid pace and in 2004 we will also be looking at a number of exciting new opportunities in the UK.”
Ms Bramwell said the continuing world-wide interest in joining CIDESCO indicated the excellent reputation the body enjoyed in delivering the premier international beauty therapy accreditation.
“A CIDESCO diploma is still regarded as the most prestigious accreditation possible in the beauty industry,” Ms Bramwell said.
CIDESCO ‘s Public Relations Board Member Dianne Miles said clients of CIDESCO-accredited salons had peace of mind in knowing that their therapists had undergone a minimum of 1200 hours in training to gain their diploma.
She said other benefits of a CIDESCO education were:
• To the therapist –the best education possible. Therapists are inducted in all facets of the field and are taught to think and apply that knowledge for the best outcomes.
• To the potential employer – the CIDESCO qualification acts as a quality assurance badge. Salons can employ a CIDESCO graduate from anywhere in the world and know that the level of skill and knowledge is of a uniform high standard.
• To the clients – there is the confidence that any CIDESCO therapist at any salon anywhere in the world has met an assured standard.
Ms Miles said CIDESCO affiliation also provided an unparalleled network for beauty therapists to share the very latest knowledge, ideas and product developments.
“CIDESCO has been setting the international benchmark for beauty therapy for almost 60 years. Our anticipated growth for 2004 is evidence that our industry standing is still unrivalled,” she said.
