With spring here six weeks earlier than usual, the imminence of warm weather is in the forecast. As I go through my home to redecorate for the changing seasons, one of the first things to go is my warm, winter blankets, and in comes the cool, crisp linens that keep the temperature down on hot summer nights. Before you go shopping for new sheets, here’s some tips to keep your body chilled even when the nights get steamy.
The first thing to think about is the temperature of your bedroom. If you run your air conditioner 24/7 like me, you may need a warmer throw to pull up around you during the night. Otherwise, I suggest cotton sheets, as they’re durable and will help keep you cool. In-Fusions is one of my favorite brands now, not just because they're a client, but also because they're intune with my clutter-free design phylosophy. I also love jersey sheets, but find that they induce sweating with me, which is the opposite of what you’re trying to do. I save those for the winter.
The next think to take into account is your body type. I’m in an office full of women, so when the temperature goes above 70, there’s a battle between them and me over what level to run the AC. Smaller people tend to require more sheets to keep them warm; therefore they may want to opt for a light down comforter or wool blanket. I, on the other hand am a bigger guy, so I tend to push everything off me during the night and cover with a basic cotton flat sheet. If you have a partner
The last thing to take into account is thread count. While it may not have much to do with keeping you cool or warm, quality sheets can do a lot to make your sleep more comfortable. The general rule for thread count is as follows. 180-220 thread count is "good;" 230-280 thread count is "better;" and 300 to 400 thread count is "best." I always go for a minimum thread count of 300-320, and suggest you do the same. There are a lot of options out there today, so you can get a great price while maintaining quality. Don’t scrimp on your sheets. You spend a lot of time in bed, so it’s okay to splurge a bit.
