PostSecret: Learning About Human Behavior Through Anonymous Thoughts

Human behavior is such a curious thing. We have parts of ourselves that we show others, and parts we just keep to ourselves. Sometimes the things we keep inside need to find their way out.

I’m sure you are all familiar with the site PostSecret. It’s where people anonymously send in their secrets via postcard or email to the blog owner, Frank Warren, who then posts them for all to see. It’s each person’s little way of releasing themselves from the secret that burdens them. Some of the postcards sent in make you gasp at the unbelievable statements, while others make you gasp with sadness. It really is such an interesting site and one that I always read straight down to the bottom of the page each time. This is quite remarkable, since sometimes blogs/websites don’t hold my attention for too long. It’s part of our human nature to be curious as to someone’s pain, joy and just plain raw emotion.

Another new site I also landed upon is called, “This may sound stupid but…” This is a blog where you email in questions to the blog owner that you may never ask out of fear of sounding (and looking) stupid. Like PostSecret, you remain anonymous. It’s quite an interesting site and even amusing. There are some questions that the blog owner can’t seem to find the answers to and then asks its readers to help answer the question. For example, “How did the G String get its name?” They don’t seem to know, do you?

I think that’s what makes blogs like this popular, we can all sit quietly behind our computer screens and watch human nature unfold…sometimes even knowing that we may feel the same way as some of the people who sent in their anonymous piece of self.
