Normally my writing gets broken up throughout the day without too many distractions beyond normal children interruptions, but today before I even started writing my posts, I received a phone call that a friend had unexpectedly passed away. The caller didn’t know all the details surrounding her death, but it was quite a shocker to me as I had only talked to her a month ago. This set the tone for the rest of my day and I sat staring at my computer screen unable to write for most of the entire day. It didn’t really matter how much I surfed the web for ideas, nothing sounded good enough for me to write about. I had a sure-fire case of writers block.

So as I sit at my desk at 11:30pm, I wondered how to overcome it. I have expectations of how good my writing needs to be and my boss has expectations…so the pressure was on. I realized that was my first problem: putting pressure on myself to write the perfect post. It’s almost like when you are trying to go to sleep and you just can’t because you are trying too hard. I was trying too hard to overcome my writer’s block, which was obviously getting me nowhere.
If you are a writer or Blogger, here are some tips on how to overcome that dreaded case of writer’s block:
Relax: Once you take the pressure off of yourself to write the perfect post, your mind will ease up a bit. Stop trying so hard!
Take a break: If it means an hour away to watch mindless TV to get your mind off of writing, so be it. Or you can simply watch the news or “fake news” shows. Many times just watching the Today Show or The Colbert Report will give me some ideas for posts.
Eat and drink: Great minds cannot think on an empty stomach.
Freewrite: Think of something mundane and then try to describe it as if seeing it for the first time. Sometimes just freewriting can get your brain flowing with ideas.
Word Cluster: Write down words that come to mind, then simply look at each word to think of others that are similar. From there try to formulate ideas for content that you can write that has to do with those words.
