My Fashionless 9 Months: What To Wear When Pregnant

One would think that products geared at pregnant women would be very well covered. Simply mention stretch marks and you automatically think Palmer’s Cocoa Butter, whose name is synonymous with the thought of being pregnant. However, I have to tell you, quality and quantity of products in this department are severely lacking.

When it comes to fashion, pregnant women are thought of last. While everyone says they think pregnancy is “an amazing time,” the fact is it is not an amazingly fashionable time. If you don’t have a never-ending wallet and can afford A Pea in the Pod, which does have amazing designer fashion for mom’s to be, you simply have to settle for over sized shirts that look more like Moo Moo dresses and jeans that might look swimmingly on a short statured person like me. I am always so frustrated by the lack of decent fashion during these 9 months and even more frustrated when I have to try to fit into simply small, medium, large or extra large. Gone are actual sizes, but instead generalities in size. So if you try on medium, you may risk being uncomfortable, however large may make you look frumpy. Heaven forbid you are short, the pants are always made for women of “average height.”

My biggest pet peeve of all has got to be the lack of quality and fashion in maternity bras. So for anyone who wants to be pregnant, let me just warn you that you will now start having to wear bras that resemble the Platex 18 Hour Bra. No more lacy things, no more pretty things, somehow the maternity clothing industry feels that comfortable trumps you feeling (and looking) beautiful. I did, at one point, find a bra that resembled a semi-normal looking designer bra. However, while the fashion was there, the quality certainly was not. After two washings, the underwire simply popped right out and I had to go back to my plain white cotton maternity bra.

So I ask you, where are the companies who actually care that I want to look good despite an ever-expanding belly? That I do still believe that fashion is a must and that quality and durability are still important? Where are the maternity clothes that are affordable, but with style that look they came from the runway?
