Last night was the opening gala for Hearst Corporation's new towers on Eighth Avenue and it only took half a billion dollars to get the old girl opened. Rumours have circulated for years that the Hearst girls have had a bit of the old green monster when it comes to Conde Nast's digs at 4 Times Square but with the new Foster Norman glass tower serving as the home of the Hearst stable it seems that building envy will be a thing of the past. They did manage to one up the "Conde Nasties" in one area though: building wide Wifi. Perhaps this was a bid to save on editors' Blackberry bills? In 2003 Hearst generated 250 Gigabytes of of data daily!
But all talk of rivalry aside, last night all of media land appeared to be on hand for the building's opening including some very unlikely guests. Rumour has it that Conde Nast Chairman Si Newhouse made an appearance with his "cronies" Charles Townsend and Steven Newhouse.
With champagne flowing and celebrities like Oprah Winfrey (whose own title is regarded as the most successful magazine launch in Hearst's history) on hand all we can say is congratulations Hearst! Check out the party photos at Getty
