Gold is the new pink. Shorts are the new pants. Ankle boots are the new slouchy boots. Leggings are the new panty-hose. And 20 is the new 40; at least when it comes to fashion icons. The days of worshipping the middle age women and their daring fashion on Sex and the City have slipped away. Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall have been traded in. The media has upgraded to the newer, younger, hipper, and oh-so stylish twenty-something trendsetters. Nicole Ritchie is the new Carrie Bradshaw.
When I was a child I devoured my mother's fashion magazines. I worshipped Michelle Phiffer and Goldie Hawn. (Not exactly 40 at the time, but certainly not 20) I would sit Indian-style in my mother’s closet, staring at her beige St. John’s jumper, willing myself to be 30-something so I could to could dress like that. Alas, I have grown up and my fashion icons are no longer glamorous grown women. Every week (let’s be honest, every two days) I scoop up every celebrity magazine on the newsstand that I haven’t yet bought in hopes of emulating Lindsay or Mary-Kate’s latest outfit. And I can not even begin to express the sheer joy I feel when there is a new Teen Vogue sitting next to the cash register. (It is comparable to finding a great new pair of jeans.) I race home, close my door, and allow myself three uninterrupted hours to absorb every morsel of fashion advice provided in the teenage fashion bible. After I have carefully read the magazine, I dog-ear the pages plastered with adolescents whose outfit I find truly inspiring, and then place it on the dresser next to my closet. Whenever I find myself in a fashion lull or just want to put together a new trendy outfit, my trusty, dog-eared, teenage girls’ magazine inspires me.
Mary-Kate and Sienna Miller began the boho craze. Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Ritchie sport spandex leggings as if they don’t own a pair of jeans. Mischa Barton is the new face of Bebe and Jessica Alba always looks laid-back and trendy, a style that screams California cool. But will these 25 and younger fashion icons soon be replaced too? Watch out Nicole, Dakota Fanning is biting at the heels of your Jimmy Choos!
