I was over a girlfriend’s place the other night. Bored and penniless, we decided to watch a DVD from her collection. Since it was my turn to pick out the movie, I walked over to the DVD shelf. As I was skimming through the titles, I noticed something quite bizarre. Not only did she have each individual season of Sex and the City, but she also had the complete six seasons set. Her explanation was that they were different, because the latter was sold as one “special complete set.” After I told her she was ridiculous, and should get her head checked, I realized that HBO is probably making a killing off of people like her.
Before the DVD, the only chance a network had of making money from retired shows were through reruns and syndication. But over the last few years, networks have been profiting from selling old shows on DVD.
Even if you almost shot yourself because you sat through an episode of the Anna Nicole Show, you will be sure to find the first season on sale. I was walking through the DVD aisles in Best Buy, and I ran into so many shows I had never even known existed. Have you ever heard of the Andy Milonakis Show or the Red Green Show? I know I haven’t, although, I was quite tickled when I saw Da Ali G Show on shelves. With all the selections, I sometimes wonder if the archives will ever be tapped. But with TV as the forerunner of entertainment in America, I am sure we will have an ever flowing supply of shows.
