So this week my favorite show, Project Runway, began its third season. I was unsure of what to expect but let’s just say that after watching the first episode, I think this season is going to be wonderful to watch! One question I have is why are so many of the new contestants 40-somethings? There are more than any other season—maybe the show is aiming for a new demographic…
You can definitely tell Project Runway is coming up in TV land. Tim Gunn is a little more fab than he already was, Nina has her won spotlight commercials and product placement has never been more prevalent in any other season! Not only do they have the TRESemmé hair salon and the L’Oreal make up studio but now there is the Macy’s accessories wall! I mean really—what are we going to have to look for next season—the Singer Sewing lounge??

Okay so let’s dish about the episode—the contestants had to make outfits from items they found in their rooms at the Atlas. Some used easy items like the curtains or a bed sheet while others were actually innovative using things like chandeliers. I thought it was interesting that each designer seemed to have a huge explanation of their design, hello, in the words of Michael Kors—it’s fashion, it’s not that serious! I guess sometimes it is nice to know where the inspiration comes from but I just felt like these people were feeding us a lot of BS! My favorite was Vincent—if you are going to put a basket hat with chains hanging from it on your model, be confident to defend it! If I were him, I would have played off the creative—if he was really into fashion, he could have compared the crazy look to Victor and Rolf’s show a couple of years ago when they put antlers on the models—antlers, baskets same thing right? But instead he buckled at the knees and said “Yeah I wasn’t sure about the hat.” No good Vincent—lucky for you Stacey had no idea how to sew (don’t even get me started on that) or you would have been the one that was OUT!

On a last note—at the end of the show, a disclaimer appeared in which I have never seen before—it read:
“Judges considered both scores and input from the producers
and Bravo in reaching their elimination decisions.”
Hmmm….so it isn’t based on talent alone? After all, it IS reality television—but this is the thing—while I like Michael Kors and Nina Garcia (I actually LOVE her) I think they tend to be a little extreme when judging—I mean really do we think the next great American designer is going to come from Project Runway—maybe when that America’s Next Top Model winner lands the cover of Vogue….yeah…right.
