Summer 2006 Fashion Trends

Every summer, we see a brand new trend or group of styles that are all the rage. Last year, terry cloth moo-moo dresses, and lots of hanging, loose peasant type clothing. This year, fashion takes a turn for the more classy looking outfits.

1. Eyelets- This classy look gives off rays of beauty and purity. It reminds us of a virgin porcelain doll during the 50’s time era. BCBG, Betsey Johnson, and Shelli Segal all have their renditions of the eyelet.
summerfashion1.jpg

2. Puff or Bubble Dresses- Straight from the 80’s, this summer ’06 trend could be called the puff, balloon, or poof. Basically, the style calls for a magnified hem at the bottom of a dress, shirt, or skirt- giving an enhanced ladies figure. Nicole Miller, Cynthia Rowley, and H&M all have renditions.

Tommy Sells Out and Buys In

tommy_hilfiger_2.jpg

Tommy Hilfiger, the father of American apparel has cashed in $1.6 billion from Apax Partners in exchange for his company this past week. Hilfiger now owns his own entertainment company, Tommy Hilfiger Entertainment. After his huge sellout, Hilfiger is placing a $20 million investment into a film called “Rags”; an inside look into the New York fashion industry. Hilfiger has owned his media company for over six years and he plans to invest quite a bit of capital and time into development and production.

The film will take a ground breaking look at the fashion industry from the viewpoints of a fashion publicist, model, aspiring designer, and a manager, just to name a few. The film was written by Dale S. Lewis and will act as director as well. Get ready for high-energy drama, laughter, and lust. The film will be a joint venture production along with Hilfiger’s son’s company, Young Rich and Famous Entertainment.

Julia Roberts as the New Face of Avon

julia.bmp

Following the lead of some of today’s hottest female actresses, Julia Roberts jumps on the beauty endorsement bandwagon. Avon has announced that Roberts will be the new representing face of Avon. The campaign will pay out a cool salary of $2 to $4 million. Salma Hayek is also signed with Avon; however her pay stubs are a bit lower, averaging about $1 million annually.

Julia’s new endorsement deal comes at a perfect time; just as she was dropped as Dior’s spokeswoman. Apparently, Roberts was not famous enough to carry the weight of the House of Dior.

A few years after the release of the Erin Brockovich giant utility pollution story, played by the very talented Julia Roberts, another lawsuit is pending. In real life, Brockovich’s law firm, Massry and Vititoe, entered into a huge $6 billion lawsuit against the familiar makeup empire, Avon; claiming that unsolicited orders were shipped to their sweet sales representatives, followed by a demand for payment. It is quite interesting how cyclical and ironic the world is.

XXX FHM

XXX FHM.jpg

FHM is one of the fastest growing men's magazines in both the US and UK. Is it the hard-hitting feature stories? Maybe it’s the book reviews? No! FHM has figured out what young men [everywhere] want to read about most…SEX! And come July, the US version will raise temperatures, and the stakes for men’s magazines, by featuring a porn star on the cover.

Earlier this year, the UK version of FHM scored big when they put popular adult film star Tera Patrick on the cover. The sexy spread helped make the issue one of their bestselling ever and pushed them to feature Patrick on the US cover for the month of July. As if that wasn't enough good news, Tera's husband Evan says, “FHM Executive Editor Sam Barclay said it is not only the sexiest and best looking FHM covers ever, but it's one of the most arresting images Sam has ever seen in his life.”

We’ll have to wait and see if FHM can reach the same climax again in the States. My guess is that they have plenty of stamina for a second go with Tera.

ANNA NICOLE SMITH PREGNANT!

anna-nicole.jpg

I realize in this world we live in that we face so many issues. Teen pregnancy is still on the rise, more people than ever have contracted AIDS and the US economy is a disaster. Now we have yet another issue on our hands….Anna Nicole Smith is pregnant.

Yesterday, after a month of speculations, Anna Nicole Smith confirmed she is pregnant with her second child. The father has not been named…heck she probably doesn’t even know who it is. As confirmed by Anna in a video clip posted on her website, Anna had the following to tell her fans:

"Let me stop all the rumors. Yes, I am pregnant. I'm happy, I'm very very happy about it. Everything's goin' really, really good and I'll be checking in and out periodically on the Web and I'll let you see me as I'm growing,"

Mind you, all this was said as she was floating on an inflatable raft in a swimming pool as a small white dog barks in the background….a real classy girl.

Anna Nicole has a 20 year old son, Daniel, from her first marriage. If any of you watched Anna’s reality show on the E! Television channel obsessively like I did, you will remember him. Anna could barely remember his name much less her own. How is it that this woman can still reproduce!?

She married Texas oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II in 1994, when she was 26 and he was 89. He died the following year. Since then, she has feuded with Marshall's son, Pierce Marshall, over her entitlement to the tycoon's estate. Last month, Smith won a judgment from the Supreme Court last month that allows her to continue to seek part of Marshall's fortune.

After Anna wins her entitlement (because we have a spiteful God) and she has a baby girl named Becky Sue (because that only makes sense), she will actually be living the life of the Beverly Hillbillies!. Stay tuned…

Former Dr.90210 Surgeon Comments on Male Plastic Surgery Increase

According to a report by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, in 2005, males comprised 16 percent of all cosmetic plastic surgery consumers—a five percent increase from 1996, when they made up only 11 percent of total patients. Their decision to seek plastic surgery may parallel the reasoning of their female counterparts, but just like the procedures themselves, the rationale behind the surgery comes with an exclusively masculine twist.

"More and more men are considering plastic surgery than ever before," says former Dr.90210 surgeon Dr. Anthony Youn. "As baby boomers continue to age, many men are using plastic surgery as an aid for competing in the workplace."

2005 American Society of Plastic Surgery
1. Rhinoplasty
2. Hair Transplantation
3. Liposuction
4. Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lift)
5. Gynecomastia Repair (male breast reduction)

"The newer, less invasive procedures are extremely popular because they don't need to take time off or show the tell-tale signs of traditional plastic surgery," comments Dr. Youn.

Drunk Shopping – Fashion Disaster or a New Way to Shop

121305.jpg

Wouldn’t you hate to wake up one morning and rub your face trying to recall what you did yesterday? Your head pounds and all you can think about is the cup of Joe and aspirin you desperately need. You roll over and lying next to you is a pair of jeans, and a receipt that says that $300 was credited from your account for three t-shirts…scary? you bet…

If you make your way through West Hollywood, or if you’re a local, you may want to keep this place in mind on your next trip; Lisa Kline, a trendy, urban Los Angeles clothing store popular with such celebs like Britney Spears and Denise Richards is bringing the class of wine and spirits to your daily shopping routine. While you hunt for a new pair of jeans, or a new shirt, you can enjoy an ice cold corona, an exotic cocktail or a glass of wine, whatever suits your passion. I visited Lisa Kline Men located at 123 S. Roberston Blvd. across the street from the popular women's Lisa Kline and down the street from the uber cool Kitson and ever-popular The Ivy Restaurant.

This double edged sword brings the benefit of feeling like an elite client; a great feeling that any customer would enjoy while they shop. On the other hand, even a small amount of alcohol can impair our judgment. That polo you were contemplating will surely become a quick dash (or stumble) to the cashier.

This represents a new form of marketing. By altering the perception of your customers, their altered judgment could lead to higher sales. However, it can also lead to dissatisfaction and many returns after customers realize their purchase may not have been worth the money. For those who love to shop and have the wallet to fit those big eyes, go for it. If you spend your money wisely and you enjoy the most bang-explosion for your buck while dressing eloquent and in style, try more reasonable urban stores.

Luxury spending expected to surge-study - Luxury Marketing

chanel III.jpg

Spending on luxury handbags, jewelry, shoes and clothing could triple over the next four years, with companies that focus on a single brand, such as Burberry Group Plc., more likely to benefit than companies like LVMH that oversee a stable of brands, according to research released on Monday.

Sales of luxury goods rose 2 percent annually from 2001 to 2005, but that growth rate is expected to jump to 6 percent yearly through the end of this decade, consulting firm Bain & Co. said in a report.

Luxury goods spending in Asia is expected to rise the fastest -- at about 9 percent per year -- Bain predicted, defining luxury goods as high-priced personal items sold in an environment that emphasizes exclusivity.

In the 10 years ended 2004, Bain found that so-called monobrands, including Polo Ralph Lauren Corp., Tiffany & Co. Inc. and Chanel, which market their products under a single brand name, grew 60 percent faster than a group of top multibrands including cosmetics company Estee Lauder Cos. Inc. and apparel and handbag specialist Gucci Group

Sunscreen ads not targeting high-risk groups - Magazine Advertising

Magazines aimed at men and parents and families, as well as to fans of travel and outdoor recreation, rarely contain ads for sun protection products, a new study shows.

Researchers note that middle-aged and older men are the group least likely to use sunscreen, while they are at the greatest risk of dying from melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer.

Alan C. Geller of Boston University School of Medicine and colleagues reviewed six years' worth of issues of 24 popular magazines for groups at high risk of skin cancer, including men, women, teens, parents, travelers and people who enjoy outdoor pastimes such as tennis, running, golf and bicycling.

Of the 783 sun-care product ads they identified, 77 percent appeared in women's magazines, Geller and his team report in the American Journal of Health Promotion.

While women's magazines contained, on average, four sun protection product ads per issue, parenting and family magazines contained less than one such ad per issue, and outdoor recreation magazines carried sun protection product ads only once every six issues.

Allergan gets FDA OK on facial fillers - Juvederm vs. Restylane

Allergan, the Irvine-based maker of Botox, announced Monday that the Food and Drug Administration has approved three products designed to plump away facial creases. The line, called Juvederm, represents Allergan's first new products since March, when it moved to create a beauty empire with the $3 billion purchase of Inamed. The Santa Barbara company makes breast implants and facial fillers, which are often used along with Botox to reduce signs of aging. Juvederm was developed by Inamed. While Botox temporarily relaxes wrinkles around the brows, facial fillers smooth facial wrinkles and folds around the mouth. In a survey last year of patients who used Botox, 29 percent had tried a filler, according to The Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation. The global market for dermal fillers in 2005 was $442 million, a 200 percent increase since 2000. The Juvederm treatment, which is injected into the skin, lasts about six months. Juvederm will compete with Restylane, which is made by Medicis, as well as another filler awaiting approval, said Allergan spokeswoman Caroline Van Hove.

Both brands use hyaluronic acid, as opposed to collagen or animal proteins. But Allergan describes Juvederm as "next generation" because the gel is smoother and works on all skin types and colors. "It creates a really smooth, natural look," Van Hove said. Allergan officials would not say when Juvederm will be available for sale or how much they expect to earn. But Van Hove said Allergan will heavily market the treatment. Like Botox, Restylane appeals directly to consumers with ads in women's magazines and brochures available in dermatology and plastic surgery offices.

Want A Piece of Princess Margaret?

PRINCESS MARGARET JEWELRY.gif

Princess Margaret, the younger sister of Queen Elizabeth was adored by the media and press during her 71 fabulous and royal years. Four years after her death, Princess Margaret’s personal jewelry and accessories collection travels around the world before going up for auction in London.

Some pieces include a necklace she wore as a toddler to the tiara she walked down the aisle with. The collection tour included jewelry, art, personal items and Faberge pieces. Visitors had the opportunity to drop their jaws in Moscow, Hong Kong, Geneva, and New York. The collection will be dispersed at the sale in London on June 13th and 14th and the prices will not be quite that cheap.

This one-of-a-kind history making sale, organized by Christie’s Jewelry, will feature over 200 royal touched pieces and over 600 other pieces of fur furnituree, china, decorative items, and accessory boxes. The pre-sale tour was designed to strike a buzz in interest, converting to higher sales. Christie’s expects to bring in several million dollars from the exclusive sale. For example, her wedding Poltimore Tiara, worn at Westminster Abbey during the first ever televised broadcast royal wedding, will pull in about $350,000. Other pieces include a sapphire and diamond brooch with a handwritten note from Queen Mary on her confirmation day as well as as the many ruby gems that adorned the royal style of princess Margaret throughout her life.

The revenue from this sale will go towards Britain’s steep death or estate taxes. Her children will be hosting and conducting this once in a lifetime sales event. “Christie’s are honored to have been instructed to sell jewelry and works of art from the private collection of H.R.H. The Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon,” said Francois Curiel, deputy chairman of Christie’s and international head of jewelry. “We will stage an auction that pays tribute to her glamorous style and beauty.”

How Big is Your Umbrella?

I love it how these big business tycoons toting their enormous, obnoxious umbrellas feel the need to dominate the sidewalk leaving us more fashionably oriented umbrella handlers squirming around trying to avoid collision. Is there some umbrella hierarchy that I’ve failed to learn about? Feeling inferior to the finance men in black with huge umbrellas big enough to fit the pre-gastric Star Jones walking steadily in the middle of the sidewalk, I move to the side holding my fab Louis umbrella and hope that I don’t get side swiped by the big men in black.

Umbrellas.jpg

Speaking of Louis, since it seems like the rain will never go away, more and more New Yorkers are turning to designer umbrellas as their final attempt to never be caught out of style. From Prada to Louis Vuitton, our desire to be fashionable has taken over every aspect of our lives. Seems like the trend is bigger is better—just make sure that whatever you do, you follow New York City umbrella etiquette.

Behind the Scenes of JCK

jck.gif

This past week I had the pleasure of attending the JCK Show (a jewelry trade show) in Las Vegas for a fab new client, Fantasy Diamond. What a fabulous way to spend my week—looking at gorgeous jewelry! My eyes were blinded from the sparkle and bling that was everywhere. It was a fascinating show because it was well attended by international press and also the show was GY-NORMUS! I actually got lost on the international floor somewhere between the Thailand Pavillion and the China Pavillion. I did however invest in a beautiful pink sapphire ring in 14k white gold. It is a square solitaire and it will keep my finger happy until I can afford that gorgeous Fantasy Diamond ring—a flower with a hug diamond cluster in the center.
Diamond-lg.gif

Trade shows are a great place to mingle with editors and learn about an industry you aren’t familiar with. I have worked in jewelry and accessories for a while and was still amazed to see how many retailers, manufacturers and just in general how many businesses attend these shows. I am always intrigued by the floor for manufacturers of display cases and jewelry boxes, along with any other supplies retailers may need for their stores. It often makes me think about how the average consumer may not always realize what exactly goes into owning a store. I mean, those display cases have to come from somewhere right? As an avid shopper, and someone who works in the industry, I too sometimes forget about all of the little, yet important, logistics involved. It just goes to show that there is always more work involved in businesses that the general public can sometimes overlook. So, in closing I suggest we all take action and think about what really goes into putting the world together! Maybe we will stop to appreciate things a little more often.

Going Gray

When American Idol contestant Taylor Hicks, 29 years old, was recently named the next American Idol, many viewers rejoiced, but perhaps none as loudly as those with gray hair. In one interview following his win, Hicks noted, “I didn't have any idea that America would embrace gray hair as much as they have."

Although Hicks is only 29, his gray hair has touched a cord with many older folks. Most notably, the baby boomers who are nearing the retirement age and struggling to accept the inevitable signs of old age, have been inspired by Hicks’ choice to not dye his hair. According to a recent article in the Los Angeles Times, Hick’s win can be viewed as an indication that Americans are embracing the mantra that for men, “it is okay to be gray.”

H&M&M

madonna1.jpg

Who doesn’t Heart H&M? It’s the eclectic retailer of affordable, mass-produced individuality. Whatever the trend or style, it seems they’ve got it, and it’s been that way since they Hennes & Mauritz ventured Stateside around the turn of the century. They sent New Yorkers into a tizzy when they had a brief, but successful affair with Karl Lagerfeld. That launch saw lines around the block. Then they had a tryst with Stella McCartney. Now, they’ve selected a new mistress, and it’s none other that the Material Girl, Madonna. While on one hand I love both Madge and her new business bedfellow for their ability to be so many things to so many people, I am a bit angry at their joint role in one of the most unflattering trends of summer ’06: Leggings. Yes, I loved them under my skirts as an 80’s/90's kid. Yeah, it was a bit cool to see the woman who inspired me to wear them back then wear them again. But no, IT IS NOT FUN to see everyone jump on the bandwagon. It’s said that she will have her own specially designed track suit at the stores. Let’s all hope it’s more flattering than the noisy ones my friends and I wore in ’94. Madonna and her back-ups will also be given entire offstage wardrobes and will wear H&M accoutrements in the upcoming ad campaign, which launches in August and will run through the fall. I can’t lie… I’m dying to see what it looks like.

Sweet Dreams

My mother always said there was nothing better for you than a good night’s sleep. Now I took this advice to heart and am a big advocate of sleep (the more the better!)

Recent research results from Ohio’s case Western Reserve University have just reinforced my mother’s reasonable and news that could shake the world of Jenny Craig and Slim Fast and many other organizations/schemes that promise us a better more beautiful life.

It was clinically proven that a good night’s sleep can help keep you slim! More naps – less Nutrisystem!

And this is not just idle speculation, these tests have been being conducted for the last 16 years… and they showed astounding results! It was concluded that women “who slept five or fewer hours a night were a third more likely to put on at least 33lbs than a sound sleeper”.

It was also concluded that loss of weight had nothing to do with the with the amount of food eaten by the research subjects but more patients gained more from an extra hours sleep then by skipping a meal.

So forget going out on the town for a few drinks and a slap up dinner this evening…. Stop off at home to enjoy a sensible dinner and an early night!

May not sound so appealing now but it will be worth it in the long run!!

10 wedding hot spots and 10 cheaper alternatives

According to a recent study of 1,619 brides conducted by the Condé Nast Bridal Group, 16 percent of couples now have a destination wedding, a 400 percent increase in the past 10 years.

The trend has been fueled by the desire to save money: Because guests traditionally pay their own way to the wedding venue, fewer guests make the trip, resulting in lower reception costs. Also, many resorts will kick in a free basic wedding package when a couple honeymoons at the resort for at least a week.

But the money-saving aspect of a destination wedding may be waning. The Condé Nast study reported that destination weddings cost an average of $26,000 - only $2,000 less than a traditional wedding - and that's just for the ceremony and reception; airfares and lodging are extra.

Modern Bride magazine surveyed 6,000 travel agents last year - its ninth-annual survey on the subject - and came up with a Top 10 list of honeymoon destinations and lodgings. But what if these trips exceed your budget? We've added our own suggestions on how to bring them within bounds.

Resort-style gardening

bamboo.jpg
Pros offer advice to help your greenery survive summer

When temperatures exceed 100 degrees, most of us stay in the shade or air-conditioned confines of home, office or car. Our landscape plants don't have that luxury. They must cope with the sun and heat day in and day out.

It isn't unusual for plants to die, turn crispy or droop as temperatures rise. However, just because we live in the desert doesn't mean our landscapes have to look barren. And it doesn't mean your water bill needs to exceed an extra $100, either.

Gardeners at Valley resorts and hotels face the same challenges as your neighbors, but the gardeners' business is to keep the grounds looking fabulous for weddings, banquets, meetings and guests. Replacing dead plants on a daily basis isn't good for the bottom line, so gardeners plant what they know will grow well, look great and enhance the landscape.

60TH ANNUAL TONY AWARDS

tony_award.gif

It was a wonderful night of singing and dancing at the 60th Annual Tony Awards.

The History Boys triumphed winning six awards, including Best Play. The History Boys actually hold the record for the most Tony Awards ever given to a play. Also winning Best Actress in a play this year from History Boys was Frances de la Tour, whom you might recognize as the huge tall giant in the last Harry Potter movie.

Jersey Boys rightfully won for Best Musical. John Lloyd Young from Jersey Boys won Best Actor in a musical and LaChanze from the Color Purple won Best Actress in a musical.

Although there a many stars on Broadway, the most famous of all celebrities graced the stage with her presence…Oprah Winfrey. Oprah is one of the producers for the Color Purple and although her musical did not win the “Best Musical” trophy, she can be relaxed knowing The Color Purple already has a two year sold out run.

As I headed last night to and from different Tony parties, I was able to congratulate and even meet a couple of my inspirations…no I didn’t get to meet Oprah this time. At one time last night, Julia Roberts was five feet away from me on one side and on the other Chita Rivera. It was quite an experience. I respect the Tony Awards more than any other award given. When you’re on stage in front of hundreds of people, you can’t ask the director to stop the camera. Please remember to support the arts and try to see all of these Tony award winning musicals this year.

Online vs. in-store shopping - one publicist's experience.

I have recently been in the market for a new messenger bag. Since my time has been limited, I decided I would browse online to see what brands I liked and where I could buy them. Don’t get my wrong, I love my Tumi, but it can be too large for my needs. I wanted something smaller and more casual. I prefer a designer bag (or at least “designed”), a good price (around $300 for a designer label –OUCH, I KNOW – and under $100 for a non-designer brand), highly functional and of good quality (it MUST last).

It’s been a couple of years since I shopped online. I remember it used to be easy to shop with sites full of functionality and images. I’d simply point, click and be done… but not anymore. I went through many sites and found very few that had decent stock, site functionality, product details or even an option buy them! I visited: Bloomingdales.com, LouisVuitton.com, Prada.com, Macys.com, Barneys.com, SaksFifthAvenue.com, JackSpade.com, ManhattanPortage.com, Bluefly.com, Gucci.com and Diesel.com.

"THE VIEW" BIDS FAREWELL TO MEREDITH VIEIRA

vieira.jpg

A goodbye “roast” was given to Meredith Vieira of the “The View” this past Friday. What should have been a funny grand farewell turned into an embarrassing awkward goodbye show fit for someone that might be leaving a local cable show.

Mario Cantone, Joan Rivers and Gilbert Gottfried joined for a Friar's Club-style roast with Vieira giving as good as she got. "You guys put a show together that looks like it took the time that Bill takes to comb his hair," she said, as the camera panned to bald executive producer Bill Geddie.

No one was sure why Gilbert Gottfried showed up. Mario Cantone was only there because he had been a guest 31 times and Joan River’s half way awkward joke was when she cracked, "It's going to be very hard to do 'The View' without you and without Star -- oh, sorry, that's next week!"

Kelsey Grammer made a quick appearance but only to (jokingly) plug his new movie XMen:3. Seriously.

Barbara Walters also tried her hand at comedy but failed miserably. She seemed so uncomfortable reading the teleprompter. She peaked with "We just hope that given your drinking habit you're able to tell 'Today' from tomorrow and, more importantly, Matt Lauer from Al Roker." My inside source at ABC tells me that Barbara is actually furious at Meredith for leaving “The View” and can’t believe ABC didn’t try to counter the offer given by NBC.

All in all, the farewell show was a total bore. I was able to watch Katie Couric’s farewell and they had such stars as the cast of “Jersey Boys,” Martina McBride, Trisha Yearwood and many others. This doesn’t include the many prerecorded goodbyes given by various A-List celebrities. My source at ABC also told me that as soon as Meredith’s farewell show was over, she immediately got in her SUV and never looked back. Good for you Meredith!

An Oasis of Beauty

Picture 117_small.jpg
If you’ve been under a rock, you may have missed the ravings of Pierce Mattians throughout the city. We have arrived, ladies and gentlemen and the address is smack dab in the heart of Times Square. This week I had the pleasure of hosting editors at the Pierce Mattie Media Oasis to promote an in-salon service made famous by Joico Hair Care.

L'Oreal’s down with the Sisters…Are you?

s2dlogo.jpg
Who knew? Ethnic Personal Care is a huge market! Different hair textures, different skin tones and totally different needs than women with less melanin and silkier hair. African American women spend two to three times the amount of money on hair care and maintenance than do other ethnicities.

My editor sister friends, take notice! Women of Color read your words. We want to live by them but it is hard, oh so hard! We want you to lead us to products that work for us! And that, oh sister friends, is why I am here. Check out some stats below and let’s get some ethnic hair care brands- both independent and corporately owned- on the page!

When One Magazine Closes…

11948165.jpg

Just when one magazine folds, another swoops in to take it’s place.

On February 24th this year, news spread fast that the luxury magazine Absolute was folding after Domingo Cuadra reportedly lost interest in funding the Spanish-origin magazine. Then rumors starting circulating that real estate tycoon William May was ready to shell out seven figures to bring the publication back. Now the word on the street is that New York Home, owned by Hour Media, a Michigan-based publishing group, is ready to bring the magazine back. Whatever the case may be, I wish they would finally make a decision. I personally loved the magazine, and every time I hear a rumor that it is re-opening, it is the same as hearing that Sex and the City is moving to the big screen - always on the edge, but never reaching full climax.

The Double Edged Ford

In the world before Tom Ford, Gucci fell into suede loafer obscurity, requiring a serious face lift. After a few seasons at the Italian design emporium, Ford’s input swiftly reinvented the house of Gucci, making The G a status symbol yet again. Images of smoky-eyed models on a black runway sporting dresses with strategically placed cut outs come to mind. A stunning Gwyneth Paltrow wearing that red velvet suit shot the line into the celebrity stratosphere. The result was a revamped Gucci brand and lifestyle that screamed sex, wealth, beauty and elitism. The average citizen needed not apply.

However, once street vendors in New York City started selling imitation hobos and sunglasses with rhinestone G’s glued on the temples, Ford must have gotten bored by the baseness of it all. He then sunk his teeth into another brand needing a boost, Yves Saint Laurent. Once again, the famed American managed to resuscitate a stuffy old European brand desperately in need of a shot of adrenalin. Although you’d be hard pressed to find Yves Saint Laurent copies for sale on Canal Street, Ford’s signature YSL runway Grecian goddess looks and ladylike ruffles can be found anywhere from be be to Ann Taylor at this point.

Ford has since struck gold again at famed cosmetics powerhouse Estee Lauder where he is busy reviving the namesake’s line of color and fragrance. After relaunching Youth Dew with Ford’s sexy touch, their fragrance sector saw a 27% growth, claims the company website. This summer’s Azuree line that Ford designed is sure to boost the company’s cosmetic sales, given that the packaging is incredibly chic and the colors universal for all skin tones.

Given his resume, it is safe to say that Tom Ford is a sure thing.

Perhaps that is why he felt so inclined to design his own line of eyewear. He banked on his own bankability, and as a result, every five faces from 86th street down to Houston have sunglasses with “TF” on the side. Ford has successfully pimped himself out. Did he not realize that he would be giving commoners a VIP pass? Does he not want anything to remain sanctified?

At this point, he might as well sell his shades at the Gap. Don’t get me wrong, I do admire his successes and his inspired vision. I just don’t see him as a household name. I cringe at the thought of him designing an ipod or a line at H&M. You just know that one of the two has got to be next on Ford’s agenda.

Ready, Set, Tivo!

If you are like any other fabulous New Yorker, you probably won’t be sitting on your sofa munching on Funyons and watching tonight’s highly anticipated Dateline interview with Britney Spears. So set your Tivo and watch it when you get home because it will be all the rage around the water cooler tomorrow! It has been months since Spears’ last televised interview as she has been trying to keep a low profile since being a new mom. Sorry Britney, but discretion has never been on your side and the world won’t give up on finding out what has been going on behind closed doors.

Spears has received much scrutiny over her parenting skills, her marriage and if she’s got another bun in the oven (yes, she does!) and it’s amazing she hasn’t had a nervous breakdown. Apparently we will see her come close in tonight’s interview with NBC hottie Matt Lauer. As she tries to tell America that she’s part of the common folk, trying to raise a child and have a successful marriage, she breaks into tears. Nice theatrics!

I have to say that I really feel bad for her though. Imagine being a young mother for the first time, which women do everyday, and being nervous and afraid that you won’t be able to raise your child right, all while being examined under the paparazzi microscope? I know I wouldn’t be able to take it. Hang in there Britney!

Catch the interview tonight at 9:00 p.m. Eastern on NBC.

The No Name Assistants: A Look at the Devil Wears Prada

We hear that the invitations to The Devil Wears Prada screening went out to executive editors and their assistants – big shocker. But what makes this PR initiative so great was that they were addressed to “Asst. To Ingrid Sischy,” “Asst. to Nina Garcia,” etc.! How fantastic! “Where the assistants have no names,” Jossip playfully referred to it. (Although, since we’re on the other side we know how much our lovely ladies work—our beauty team loves you).

DevilPrada.jpg

Speaking of Ms. Anna Wintour, PETA just can’t seem to leave this poor fashion maven alone. Sometime last week, it’s been rumored that PETA headed up to THE building (4 Times Sq for those of you who can’t keep up) on parade for “The Devil Wears Fur.” Cute but can we just leave her alone? She looks fab – great job Mr. Talley for keeping hers truly (AND the pages of Vogue) looking AMAZING!

The Next Starbucks?

Starbucks. You see one on every corner of the city. And oh how do New Yorkers love their Starbucks! But if you’re tense or stressed out, that giant jolt of caffeine from your grande caramel frappuccino is not going to help. If you’re pressed for time, taking the day off to get a relaxing massage to calm the nerves is probably not an option either. But imagine if you could get a massage at a mini station during your lunch break! San Francisco has the right idea with Zubio.

stations2.jpg

Thought you could only get a quick massage in an airport? Zubio’s massage stations offer 10 or 20 minute Japanese acupressure massages that distress and tune up the mind and body. With almost half of working Americans claiming stress as one of their top concerns in their lives, will quickie massages be the answer?

Watch out for Zubio, it might be coming to a street near you! Until then, New Yorkers will settle with our Starbucks.

Cruise Control: Gucci Back to Looking Good!

look 3 gucci.jpg

On Wednesday, the house of Gucci held a show for all to view the new Cruise Collection. I must say praise the Lord for Frida Giannini! I haven’t seen Gucci look this fabulous since Tom Ford was there (tear!) While I think Ford was one of the best designers this house has seen, Giannini is certainly on her way. Do we even remember who that designer in between was? I don’t, all I know was it was not good, hence, the reason she only lasted a year. Luckily, t he media only had great things to say about Gianni’s latest triumph. I look forward to seeing many more collections from this talented designer. I predict her name will become parallel to Tom Ford’s in five years. Write it down people!

The collection was an ode to St. Tropez, 60’s style—I loved it. Prints were nautical and floral all in one—other than Oscar de la Renta, it was my favorite cruise collection this season. My favorite pieces were the shorts, peasant dresses and short skirts. It was orgasmic just looking at the collection, click after click, the perfect look, the perfect dress, the perfect shorts! If only I were a rich socialite who could order all of it! I would be on a yacht, drenched in Gucci. So, if any of you readers out there would like to send me some items from the cruise collection—go right ahead! You can send them to the office www.piercemattie.com

Before You Date, Check His References

Imagine…you step into the club, and all eyes are on you. Black Opal beat your face into gorgeous submission, JOICO has your weave bouncy and shiny, your Perazzi jeans accent your curves perfectly and your Tara heels mean you can dance all night. Then, as you float through the crowd, you spy the most gorgeous man you’ve ever seen. The two of you exchange information, and as you part ways you wonder if your children will have your lips or his eyes. Before you start picking out names, though, you might want to look him up on dontdatehimgirl.com.

It’s an online blacklist, where women post warnings about the men who have done them wrong. While there’s plenty of room for improvement on the site, and there are way too many ignorant posts, the concept is impressive. If potential employers and creditors can check references, why can’t potential girlfriends? Now, someone should start a boyfriend referral site, where gals can post info on good guys who just weren’t right for them. It’s not fair for bad boys to get all the publicity.

New Yorkers: The Politest People on Earth

In the Big Apple, it seems that everyone is in a rush to do something or be somewhere 24 hours a day. For instance, ever notice when crossing the street, New Yorkers are already halfway to the other side before that light turns green? With all this rushing around, who knew that New Yorkers would have time to be polite? According to Reader's Digest, New York is the "Most Courteous" city in the world!

Reader's Digest recently conducted an admittedly unscientific survey of 35 major cities around the world to measure courtesy. Through a series of three tests given to 2,000 participants, reporters from Reader's Digest walked into buildings to see if people held the door open, bought items from stores to see if salespeople would say "thank you," and dropped a folder full of papers in busy locations to see if anyone would help pick them up. Four out of five New Yorkers passed the courtesy tests scoring the highest on politeness beating out Zurich, Toronto and Berlin.

In a city where millions of people persistently push through the throngs in the streets each day, at least New Yorkers are doing it civilly with a smile. Gotta love NYC!

Lost Boys Found – The Coreys Make a Comeback

coreys.jpg

Long before they had a License to Drive, one half of this Hollywood duo was fighting Jason Voorhees and other Goons on the big screen while the other was just a "Lost Boy."

Now the team, known throughout the 80s as the “Coreys,” is in talks to reunite in a new TV sitcom that will be loosely based on the pair’s life. While there are no details on the title, plot or even a network, it is being rumored that the show could be in production and have episodes ready to air in time for the new Fall season lineup. Maybe NBC should think about signing the project. We need something better than Joey to help fill the void left when Friends went off the air. The Coreys could have just what the American viewer is looking for. We’ll just have to stay tuned for more info.

Top 5 Tech Winners and Losers – How Does iPod+Nike, Playstation and Microsoft Rate?

For every new invention that takes the world by storm, there are a dozen more that have crashed. Need I remind you of Crystal Pepsi (theme song Right Now by Van Halen)?

Now Men.Style.com has compiled their top five list of the worst inventions that are “destined for the dustbin.” Coming in first is HD Radio, followed by the Sony Book Reader and Origami Tablet PC (by Microsoft). Rounding out the top five is the Sony PlayStation 3, set to launch in November with a whopping $600 price tag, and the Nike+iPod Sport Kit, which the writer at Men.Style.com thinks doesn't have a large enough audience of interested runners.

On the flip side, here is my top five list of best inventions.

1. XM Radio – This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how we interact with the media. We’re a society that wants information fast. Someday, I predict that we will even have new movie releases beamed into our own homes. There will be now need for movie theatres anymore. So long to the Midnight Movies.

2. The Written Word – Even with all our technology, there is nothing great than a good book. My top picks include A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore and House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski (guaranteed to make you scared of the sounds that go “bump” in the spaces between your walls).

3. MacBook – By day I work on a PC, but when the sun sets, I’m a crazed Mac man. Say what you will about Apple, but they are producing some of the most powerful laptops (and computers for that matter) on the market today. The new MacBook comes with the Intel Core Duo making it powerful enough for any blogging, podcasting or film editing you want to do, straight out of the box.

4. Nintendo Wii – PlayStation and XBOX are about to get a run for their money. The new system from Nintendo About the size has three DVD cases, the Wii system will play the new double-layers 12-centimeter optical discs, along with the 8-centimeter Gamecube discs, so there is no need to replace a full collection of games. For you oldschoolers, the system will communicate with the interenet, allowing players "downloadble access to 20 years of fan-favorite titels originally released for the Nintendo 64, the Super Nintendo (SNES) and even the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)." That's right, the Mario we remember from our childhoods is coming back bigger and better than ever.

5. PumpOne – I think Apple and Nike have come up with a great product, but if you’re interested in more than just laps around the block, checkout the new programs from PumpOne. The company is producing some of the best workout programs on the market today. They are viewable on virtually on image-ready handhelds, including the iPod, giving step-by-step instructions and color images. They even have video programs. Currently, there are more than a hundred workouts including yoga, Pilates and strength training, and they are gearing up to launch dozens more, including a Swiss ball workout.

Polo and Wimbledon: Fashion Turns to Uniforms

ralph-lauren-wimbledon.jpg

This week, Polo Ralph Lauren unveiled the new uniforms for Wimbledon in which umpires, line judges and ball people will be donning on the Centre Court this year. Apparently, Polo signed a five year contract for the first ever apparel provider in the tournaments 129 year run. The uniforms are conservative yet encompass the Polo style. Women will have crème skirts while men will wear trousers and all will have classic polo shirts. Of course, the Polo pony logo will also appear on all items. While I can appreciate Polo branching out to the sports world I find it a little tacky and odd that Wimbledon agreed to move forward on this project. Wimbledon is one of the most prestigious tennis tourneys in the world. Although I am a major devotee to fashion and have never once thought it to be frivolous, I think this crosses the line. How do we make the distinction of cheap and tacky branding to high fashion and art? Seriously, is Ralph going to include this on the runways in Olympus Fashion Week? Doubtful. While I understand the profitability this union will bring to the Polo Company, I think it lacks class and prestige, although I know that my idea of prestige may differentiate from that of Ralph himself.

Ii just makes me wonder where fashion is headed. Are we going to see a boom in designer uniforms? Are doctors going to be clad in Roberto Cavalli scrubs? Maybe waiters in Versace suits? Seriously people, I am all for designer studs but this is simply crossing the line. I hope there will be plenty of television coverage on these oh so stylish uniforms during the tourney—I mean really, who cares who wins anyway, as long as the umpire is donning his Polo Ralph Lauren uniform all should be well.

Warhol's Silver Wig Sells for $10,800

Bidders flipped their wigs Thursday at a Manhattan auction where one of pop art icon Andy Warhol's signature silver hairpieces sold for $10,800.

The wig, complete with three strips of toupee tape inside, was worn by Warhol during the early 1980s. Warhol began wearing the hairpieces in the early 1960s, and they eventually turned into fashion accessories more than a cover-up for his baldness. Presale estimates for the hairpiece were $4,000 to $6,000.

It was one of several lots put up at Christie's auction house by Jeffrey Warhola, the artist's nephew. A 1977 Polaroid photo of Muhammad Ali, signed by Warhol, sold for $19,200. And a Warhol Polaroid of Mick Jagger from 1975 went for $15,600.

The top items in the celebrity sale belonged to Marilyn Monroe. A black cocktail dress worn during filming of "The Misfits" sold for $66,000, while a full-length ermine coat worn by Monroe in 1957 sold for $50,400.

Skin Care Scanner - Beauty PR with Pierce Mattie

The mirror on the wall might be able to tell who's the fairest of them all, but BrighTex Bio-Photonics LLC's scanner can tell a whole lot more.

Applying technology used for inspecting semiconductor wafers for defects, BrighTex developed the Clarity Pro facial image scanner, which claims to identify bacteria-clogging pores, show where wrinkles are forming and identify skin damage caused by the sun.

The scanner is the size of a TV set, with a large oval cavity for the user's face. Targeted at beauty spas, dermatologists and cosmetic companies, the scanner sells for $20,000. A handful of unidentified cosmetic companies have bought it so far.

Sea Shell Jewelry - It's The Adam and Eve of Harry Winston - Jewelry PR with Pierce Mattie

Ancient beads that may represent the oldest attempt by people at self-decoration have been identified from sites in Algeria and Israel.

The beads, made from shells with holes bored into them, date to around 100,000 years ago, some 25,000 years older than similar beads discovered two years ago in South Africa, researchers report in Friday's issue of the journal Science.

"Our paper supports the scenario that modern humans in Africa developed behaviors that are considered modern quite early in time, so that in fact these people were probably not just biologically modern but also culturally and cognitively modern, at least to some degree," said study co-author Francesco d'Errico of the National Center for Scientific Research in Talence, France.

Jewelry Designing in Gold - Jewelry PR with Pierce Mattie

For more than 30 years in jewelry design, John Atencio has built a reputation for heavier rings, necklaces and earrings.

So when gold prices topped $730 an ounce earlier this year, he became more conscious of how thick his pieces are - and the accompanying higher costs. Still, while retailers like Helzberg Diamonds say they've seen some designers using less gold in each piece, Atencio has been reluctant to change his style.

"When it got over $700, then the red lights were going off," Atencio said. "Then it was kind of like: 'God, how high is it going to go and are we going to be in business?'"

Gold prices have fallen 22 percent since May 12, when they reached a 26-year high of $732 per ounce, but are still close to $600 an ounce. Jewelers are accepting lower profit margins, feeling pressure to raise prices and sometimes tweaking their designs.

Melanoma Deadlier in Blacks and Hispanics - Black Beauty Update

Melanoma may be more common in whites but the most serious form of skin cancer is deadlier in blacks and Hispanics because it is more likely to go undetected, researchers report.

Blacks are more than three times as likely as whites to be diagnosed with melanoma after it has reached a late stage, and Hispanics are nearly twice as likely, according to a University of Miami study released Monday.

Late diagnosis of melanoma generally significantly reduces the chances for survival. The survival rate for those with early detection is about 99 percent, according to the National Cancer Institute. With later detection, the survival rate falls to between 15 and 65 percent, depending on how far the disease has spread.

The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 10,000 people will die from skin cancer this year, nearly 80 percent of them from melanoma.

J.Crew Prepares to Go Public - Fashion PR with Pierce Mattie

Since former Gap Inc. CEO Millard Drexler took over the leadership of J.Crew Group Inc. in 2003, the merchandising guru has worked magic on the once struggling retailer, transforming it into one of the hottest fashion chains.

Now, the New York-based fashion retailer known for its colorful preppy clothing plans to go public next week in what's being touted as one of the biggest retail IPOs in recent years. How successful J.Crew will be in the public market is unclear, but its success with consumers has been a bright spot in an industry continually undergoing consolidation.

J.Crew should also be able to weather an expected consumer spending slowdown later this year because its well-heeled customers seem to care more about getting the latest cargo jacket than they do about higher gas prices.

"It's all about retail management. You have to have the vision, the knack for picking the right merchandise," said Patricia Edwards, who helps manage retail funds for Seattle-based Wentworth, Hauser and Violich investment counselors. "This is something new to invest in at a time when everything is shrinking. There is so much disarray in retailing right now."

Payless Shoes - Footwear Marketing

When Matt Rubel took over as chief executive of Payless ShoeSource Inc. last summer, he inherited a company a little worn down at the heel.

With more than 4,600 stores, Payless is the largest specialty shoe retailer in the country. But years of conservative management had left it in the worst place for a seller of fashion - out of date.

The company continued to use a 1980s-era bubble-lettered logo, some stores hadn't seen a new coat of paint in a decade and the stores' simple layout of shoe box aisles fostered self-service but didn't do much to showcase new products.

Worse, customers found the product mix itself leaned more toward providing functional shoes for bargain shoppers, not catering to style mavens.

Jewelry TV Buys Scripps' Shop At Home

Jewelry Television has agreed to buy E.W. Scripps' Shop At Home assets for $17 million, in a deal that will see the TV and online retailer continue operations.

Last month, Scripps announced that the underperforming Shop At Home would cease its broadcasting and Internet business in late June. Since acquiring the asset in October 2002, Scripps has lost approximately $84 million on Shop At Home, the country’s fourth-largest TV shopping operation.

Jewelry TV said it will continue operating Shop At Home part time, collecting the assets––including real estate, satellite uplink facilities and all Web-related operations––under a new company called Shop At Home Network LLC. Jewelry TV COO Joe Fields on Wednesday said that the company would retain a “significant number” of Shop at Home’s 650 employees.

Stephan Sues Elizabeth Arden

Stephan Co., a maker of branded and private label personal care products, said Thursday it has filed a trademark infringement suit against high-end cosmetics maker Elizabeth Arden Inc. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, alleges that an Elizabeth Arden fragrance launched in March -- Provocative Interlude -- infringes upon Stephan's Interlude trademark. Stephan said it has made various fragrances under the Interlude trademark since the 1960s. The suit seeks to block sales of the Elizabeth Arden product. A spokesman at Elizabeth Arden was not immediately available to comment. Stephan shares were unchanged at $3.08 on the American Stock Exchange in afternoon trading, while Elizabeth Arden shares climbed 12 cents to $17.56 on the Nasdaq.

Jenny Craig A Diet PR Scoop!

I hope this dosent mean that my favorite foods from Jenny Craig are going to stop being made. I will die without my chicken fajitas and chocolate cake! But just maybe this means that finally they can start to make some seriously good chocolates!

Jenny Craig Finds Buyer In Brabeck-Letmathe's Nestle A good omen? As far as we know, Peter Brabeck-Letmathe is not in league with the devil. But he is the chairman and chief executive of Nestlé, whose announcement on Monday might have struck some as slightly diabolical: The Vaud, Switzerland, conglomerate announced it is buying Jenny Craig for $600 million. But we urge the trepidatious to read on: What you learn might drastically alter your beliefs--in a good way. Sure, the first thing you think of when you hear "Nestlé" is the dark goddess, chocolate: the sweet, irresistible temptress that elevates the mood--and expands the waistline. And of course, Jenny Craig is in the worldwide business of helping people carve off unwanted bulk. Led by CEO Patti Larchet, the "classroom" company offers education, prepared foods and phone support as part of a full way of life to health-seekers.

Are You Suffering From Swimsuit-aphobia?

Healthy Eating And Exercise May Be Just The Cure

They say babies are born with only two intrinsic fears: the fear of falling and the fear of loud objects.

Especially around this time of year, many women swear there may be one more source of anxiety that scientists simply haven't recognized yet: the fear of trying on, and wearing, a bathing suit.

From the pasty skin-enhancing mirrors to the equally unflattering lighting, dressing rooms can liquefy any woman's self-esteem faster than a Popsicle on a hot summer day. But there is hope. Losing post-winter weight through a combination of nutritious eating and physical activity can make putting on a bathing suit manageable-if not downright enjoyable.

"As we replace bulkier sweaters and pants with less concealing blouses and shorts, it's natural to feel self-conscious about the extra pounds that may have crept on during the colder months," says Lisa Talamini, RD-Chief Nutritionist and Program Director for Jenny Craig, Inc. "The important thing is to not let this get you down, but to use it as a springboard for making lifestyle changes that can positively impact your health."

Slimming Down For Summer

Hectic summer schedules can distract even the most dedicated exerciser, while backyard barbeques tempt Americans with high-calorie foods and snacks. Since it's the time of year to start trading winter wraps for warm-weather clothes, many are trying to slim down for summer and find healthy ways to improve their lifestyles.

According to a recent survey by Wrigley, nearly 85 percent of Americans believe a key to losing weight is to consume fewer calories. Most experts agree that combining physical activity while watching calorie intake is important in the quest for weight management and a healthier lifestyle.

"There is no need for a total diet makeover; taking small steps to enjoy a variety of foods and being more active can go a long way for Americans trying to lose some weight for the summer," says Molly Gee, registered dietitian at Baylor College of Medicine.

Finding The Truth Behind Common Myths by James M. Rippe, M.D.

Recently, I've been writing about 10 weight-loss myths-mistaken beliefs that can get in the way of achieving lasting weight loss. To recap, they are:

1. A few extra pounds don't matter.

2. You can't lose weight and keep it off.

3. Willpower is the key to successful weight loss.

4. You can lose weight with exercise alone.

5. Calories don't matter-avoid fat or carbs to lose weight successfully.

6. You can't lose weight if you have the wrong metabolism or genes.

7. You can boost metabolism by what, how and when you eat.

8. It doesn't matter how you take weight off.

9. There is only one right approach to weight loss.

10. Your weight is your problem and you need to solve it on your own.

To get beyond the myths, we must take the time to understand each one, to find the kernels of truth and discard the rest, and then take positive actions to lose the weight and keep it off. The key to maintaining weight loss is to understand that weight loss is not a mystery, and that taking small steps on a daily basis works.

Mature Makeover: Look Beautiful No Matter What Your Age

Celebrity Editorial Makeup Artist Frances Hathaway Shares Her Favorite Beauty And Product Secrets For 50+ Women

As many women age, they may find they have to rethink a cosmetics routine that no longer suits their changing skin. Age spots, increased dryness and loss of vibrancy are some of the specific issues facing the 50+ woman.

As one of the busiest makeup artists in the business, I've worked with the likes of Geena Davis, Vanessa Williams and Bette Midler. I believe maturing women can look better than ever; they just need to switch up their makeup as they would their wardrobe. All it takes is a little know-how and the right products:

• Prepare Your Palette. Primers prep the skin for makeup application by evening-out the skin's surface, filling in lines and concealing any imperfections. I always use face, eye and lip primers before applying color cosmetics. The key for 50+ women is to look for products that offer hydrating formulas to ease drying skin, and light-reflecting ingredients to diffuse lines, for a smoother, more even appearance.

• Bring Back Color. Many women in their 50's find that their skin becomes dry and sallow and it has lost its natural radiance and color. I recommend using hydrating products that help energize your look, such as the Vital Radiance Line Softening Makeup-Rehydrating. Its water-based formula with SPF 15 boosts moisture, while its increased color density revitalizes your complexion. And its remarkably lightweight formula won't settle into lines or wrinkles. Try using a brush to apply this product-this technique creates a polished makeup look and provides precise application. Best of all, Vital Radiance makes it easier than ever for 50+ women to look their best, offering free tips, advice and product samples. Just call (800) RADIANT seven days a week to speak to a live Beauty Specialist.

Skin Aging-Are You Speeding Up The Process?

It's no secret that our society is obsessed with looking young. As baby boomers turn 60, statistics show the U.S. market for anti-aging products and services is "growing at an average growth rate (AAGR) of 9.5%, this market will reach nearly $72 billion by 2009"*. While science has made advancements in both topical and minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, certain lifestyle factors, such as smoking, sleep loss and sun exposure, can unknowingly sabotage your personal aesthetic goals.

Although natural aging is a given, inherited by our genes-we do have control over extrinsic aging. Known as premature aging, it is caused by poor lifestyle habits that actually accelerate skin aging, including wrinkles, rough texture and uneven pigmentation.

Blender Suggests Best Bets at Best Buy

Beginning today, as part of an effort to inspire shoppers to indulge in music beyond the top 10, there will be special “Blender Approved” aisles in 658 Best Buy stores. They will feature Blender Magazine editors’ endorsements for newly released music. On first glance, I was concerned that this would lead to the promotion of only limited genres, but when I saw that the 16 recommended albums will include Def Leopard’s “Rock of Ages” and Cam’ron’s “Killa Season” I realized that they have diversity in mind. It’s a win-win-win situation for the store chain, the magazine and the music industry. For Best Buy, the partnership stands to increase CD consumption at a time when music downloading is taking hold of music purchases. Blender, which has already co-branded with VH1and AOL, hopes that the project will increase its paid circulation. (I think they have a strong chance of success in that area because they’ll reach so many new people). The music industry, already suffering from the effects of pirating and payola, will likely enjoy a boost in sales for artists that often go ignored on store shelves.

STAR JONES LEAVES "THE VIEW"

star.jpg

The word is finally out. Star Jones has announced today that she will be leaving ABC’s “The View.”

After much speculation since the announcement of Rosie O’Donnell as the new co-host, Jones made made her departure speach today after the first commercial break. “The show has decided to move in a new direction” stated Jones. "I'm not sure what the future holds," she said. "But I'm absolutely sure who holds the future." Star recently told People Magazine, “I feel like I was fired.”

Rumors have been flying as of late that the agreement made between O’Donnell and Barbara Walters was that Jones get “the axe” if she were to join the panel. My inside source at ABC tells me Walters is overjoyed to see Jones leave and that this has been a long time coming. Walters would not give Jones the satisfaction of buying her out of her contract but rather waiting till the contract was up.

On that note, Walters expressed her “sadness that it has turned out this way.” "I can't imagine how `The View' would have succeeded without you," she said.

I personally am sad to see Star Jones go. Am I a fan of hers? Absolutely not but she did make the show interesting. I would’ve given any amount of money to watch Star and Rosie go at it every day. She's not even getting a farewell show after nine years! Now that's something I would definitely have in my next contract.

To Shop or Not to Shop…Online

clip_image002.jpg

Google has everything! It’s not just a search engine, but it offers services anyone would need on a daily basis - from e-mail, instant messaging, to news, maps and now shopping! Today, Google launches Google Checkout, a technology platform designed to streamline online shopping for both retailers and Web users. But is it safe?

Through the new shopping service, participating retailers can choose to place a Google Checkout logo on the shopping sections of their Web sites, and then turn over all transactional processing, including credit card billing, to Google. For us online shoppers, we can register with Google Checkout and avoid having to fill out shipping and billing information each time we shop on the participating sites. Sounding a bit like eBay’s PayPal? Google Checkout is a little different since it will not offer person to person money transfer like PayPal does.

Google is charging a flat fee for merchants to use the new service while advertisers get the service for free. Google will also display a Google Checkout link just below advertisers' text ads.

This is all great for Google’s advertisers, but what about us consumers? It seems like a great idea – less hassle for the stores and quicker shopping for us. But with identity theft as an issue, will our personal information be stolen? With Google’s secure servers, it’s unlikely, but you never know! When shopping online, look out for security logos like Verisign to ensure your information is kept secure. Happy shopping everyone!

I'm With Kermit

I shamefully have nothing to hide. I am not into recycling. I smoke the occasional cigarette (with my wine or when work demands it). I get manicures and pedicures. I have been known to throw out piles of unused paper napkins at Starbucks. Once or twice, I have thrown out a used Tupperware to avoid cleaning it. (I am one of the unlucky New Yorkers that exits without a dishwasher).

It always seems like a huge effort to be eco-conscious and healthy for some reason. Garbage is gross. I refuse to sift through it, separating items to be recycled. On occasion, I have driven around in a big SUV. Whatever – they are comfortable AND safe. And I know it can rid a nail of its rust, but I love Diet Coke.

Over ten years ago, the ozone layer seemed to be of chief concern. Growing up I was instructed to steer clear of aerosol hair spray, so I did. Using straws was deemed unnecessary at my high school because they and their wrappers simply create waste. These things seemed simple enough to live without.

I have even tried natural personal care items. Paraben-free deodorants failed me one too many embarrassing times. Natural shampoos that lack foaming agents (which are essentially nasty chemicals) left my normally shiny hair tangled and very bird’s nest-like. I once sampled a botanical facial exfoliant which felt like I was using gravel on my skin.

I see how important it is to be Green. I saw The Day After Tomorrow. It just never seems convenient enough to become a priority for me. (Told you I was shameless).

The Green culture has come a long way though in the last ten years as it’s slowly moved into the realm of popular culture. Heck, Vanity Fair and Elle both had green issues this year. Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz made Toyota cool. (I’ve heard you can’t get a Prius before the turn of the century basically, the waiting list is so long). How many times is there a gawkerstalker sighting in a Whole Foods? Hello? Al Gore in the director’s chair? You don’t have to be labeled a tree huger anymore if you respect Mother Earth; on the contrary, you’re seen as hip.

The natural personal care sector has made leaps and bounds as well. If you’re lucky enough to try the right brand, which I actually have been, you may be using some efficacious skin care that won’t give you cancer. My personal favorite is Zia Natural Skincare because since using it my skin has never glowed more brightly (and, I confess, it does feel good to be using something totally healthy).

It has become easier (not to mention chic) to be Green, and I only anticipate it becoming easier (and chicer). But until then, I must admit I am not ready to give up my Red Bulls, Lincoln Navigators, vampy nail polish colors full of phthalates, Oreos full of hydrogenated oils and long showers. It’s simply not easy for me to be Green.

Beer with Jane…Magazine

Beer with Jane.jpg

As a part-time writer, I’m familiar with the cons of the publishing industry. Pitching stories to magazines, only to have the door slammed in your face and then later see your idea in the same magazine is an all too common occurrence. Sometimes I wish more magazines took the time to listen to new writers while developing feature ideas. But wait, there is one magazine that is doing just that!

For the past year - since Brandon Holley started as editor-in-chief - JANE magazine has been holding regular meetings for young writers, usually female college students, to help give them some insight into the publishing world.

“We started having the [pizza] dinners at the office when I first started, but they've become more intense lately,” says Holley. “We're actually up to a dinner a week. My staffers love me for keeping them past six so often.”

When asked if they have beer with their pizza, Holley responded, “You know, we don't do beer...but we could do beer. You're right. We should have beer!”

Just how do you get a sit down session with the editor in chief of one of the hottest magazines out there? Simply log onto the website HERE, or write into the magazine. Also, check out this months issue, featuring Anne Hathaway from The Devil Wears Prada. If you still want more, check out the "Behind-the-Scenes" exclusive from her photo shoot, and hear Anne dish about her fear of pizza deliverymen. You can view the clip at JaneMag.com.

Thank you Harper’s: You’ve Saved My Career

Spears1.jpg

Britney Spears owes Hearst a lot of money. No, there aren’t any lawsuits, erroneous bills (“I’d like a room full of pink candy for my shoot”), etc.

Channeling Demi Moore’s iconic pregnant cover, Britney graces the cover of the August issue of Harper’s Bazaar in the nude with her new black hair*. Thankfully, it’s the best thing she could ever do for her career. “With such a solid publication like Harper’s, this can literally save her career,” says an entertainment insider.

Harper’s released the cover for publicity but of *course* it leaked everywhere. It just adds to the hype for the issue – it’ll probably be one of their best selling covers. The August issue features various poses of Spears with strategically placed clothes and appendages. Sean Preston makes a cameo (no, K-Fed does NOT – Harper’s does have taste).

Spears2.jpg

I’m guessing this was in response to Us Weekly’s poll following the Matt Lauer interview where 87% of pollers said they now have less respect for Spears following the interview.

*Spears received so much flack after dying her hair, she released a statement to the press that she consulted her doctor before dying to make sure it was safe for her unborn child noting “it’s vegetable dye and will wash right out.” Spears then chopped off her locks without informing the Fashion Director at Harper’s (who were PISSED and added extensions) and hoped the new look would tame the press. Maybe she’s starting to follow Paris’ etiquette to smile and work with the press. “They annoy me too. I can understand going to a press event or a premiere but when they’re waiting outside your home it’s hard,” said Hilton. “I think it’s better just to smile than when people give the middle finger or are rude to them, because that’s what they want you to do. They want to get a bad picture.” Well said Paris! WELL SAID!

The Truth Behind Designer Duds

devile prada.jpg
So this week’s New York Times Style Section featured a story about the much anticipated movie The Devil Wear’s Prada. My favorite writer, Ruth LaFerla, discusses the reality of the clothing in this movie versus how the fashion industry really dresses on a daily basis. Do editors really dress in head to toe Chanel or Dior? Not necessarily…they don’t have to. The truth is, while editors may be incredibly stylish and innovative, they are not really trying to impress anyone. They just happen to be good at what they do—hence why they are working at major fashion books!

"Gimme Gimme Gimme"

devil-wears-prada.jpg

A few years ago, The Devil Wears Prada hit book store shelves and gave voice to all assistants in the glamour industries. Today, the movie opens to the public, and already it has sparked more debates than I could have imagined. One of the foremost was the claim that the wardrobe for The Devil is hardly reflective of the divine duds donned by the divas who spend their designer clad days at the big books. I can neither concur nor conflict with the idea because I’m not among the list of those who attended advanced screenings. However, I can’t wait until I can compare the chicks in the flick to my fave folks at Elle, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and all the other fab mags. The second discussion- the one in which I can actively participate- revolves around whether the main character was the victim of a tyrant or a spoiled brat with a huge sense of entitlement.

Micro-Obsession

Those last five pounds might not be so hard to lose thanks to a new surgical procedure called various, precision or micro liposuction. The procedure isn’t actually all that new, doctors began performing the surgeries about 10 years ago, but it is gaining more popularity among patients and doctors — I think largely due to America’s obsession with perfection. Areas such as the kneecaps, ankles, back rolls and inner thighs are now able to be reached with the tools used during micro liposuction, whereas they would previously go untouched.

In an article in Thursday's New York Times, Dr. Peter B. Fodor, a plastic surgeon in Los Angeles says that because of new types of ultrasound machines, which can be used to break up fat before it is extracted, and daintier cannulae, the blunt-tipped hollow tubes used to dislodge and suck out fat, have made it easier for doctors to fine-tune liposuction.

This procedure is most fit for those on the thinner side that just can’t seem to lose their love handles or “bra muscle” and have gone to great lengths to get rid of them. Liposuction generally is not recommended for those in the obese category and any reputable doctor will suggest a diet and exercise program before putting you under the knife.

New procedures like micro liposuction and genital reconstruction rise the issue of boundaries – when will we ever look good enough? Are procedures such as the latter just mere vanity or are they stepping stones to self confidence? I guess it’s just a case by case situation, but for now I’m happy with using a pair of Spanx and some concealer.

More evidence breast implants pose no cancer risk - Cosmetic Surgery Marketing

A large study has found that women with breast implants show a lower-than-average risk of breast cancer, adding to evidence that silicone implants do not contribute to the disease.

In a study of more than 24,000 women who underwent breast augmentation in the 1970s and 1980s, Canadian researchers found that the women had a 43 percent lower rate of breast cancer compared with the general population. They also showed a lower-than-average risk of developing cancer of any kind.

The findings, published in the International Journal of Cancer, echo those of past studies showing that silicone-gel implants do not appear to be a cancer risk.

George Clooney attends Giorgio Armani's menswear show

george.jpg

It's hard to get any better than Giorgio, especially if the maestro outdoes himself as he did in his latest menswear collection. Seated in the front row was the designer's friend George Clooney, in town from his villa on nearby Lake Como.

Armani's ideas for next summer more or less summed up the beach and business look that has marked this week's preview showings for spring-summer 2007.

"This is the way I would like to dress, if I were taller, younger, and had more time," the 71-year-old designer said of his collection after the show.

Armani's jackets were structured, but fashioned in ultra soft fabric, while trousers remained comfortably loose despite a formal crease. A funky waistcoat sewn into the jacket lent youth to the suit.

Armani preferred a trendy Nehru style blouse to the traditional stiff-collared white shirt, kept his jeans tight and paired his outfits with pristine white running shoes. Colors ranged from sandy beige and sea blue, to city gray.

Kate Moss back with Burberry

kate.jpg

Kate Moss is back at Burberry. The fashion house scrapped a campaign featuring the supermodel last year following tabloid accusations that she had used drugs.

Moss, 32, appears in a white lace trench coat at the center of Burberry's main autumn-winter 2006-2007 ad, one in a series launched Monday to celebrate the company's 150th anniversary.

The black-and-white ads, shot against London cityscapes by Mario Testino, feature British cultural icons and their offspring, including 1960s model Penelope Tree and actor Max Irons, son of Jeremy Irons.

Burberry distanced itself from Moss in September, after The Daily Mirror published pictures of her allegedly using cocaine. The company dropped plans for her to appear in its fall 2005 campaign, and posters featuring Moss were removed from its flagship store.
