I can’t say enough of this wonderful musical! I went to see a preview of Broadway’s “The Drowsy Chaperone” this past weekend. I haven’t laughed so hard at a musical in such a long time.
I think of this musical as the little musical that could. Just recently the Drama Desk Awards handed out 14 nominations for “The Drowsy Chaperone.” No one thought it would be this big of a hit. There wasn’t a vacant seat in the house that night.
Bob Martin, who co-wrote the show, stars as Man in Chair, who sits in an armchair and plays his favorite obscure cast album — the disc of the forgotten 1928 Gable & Stein show, The Drowsy Chaperone. The work comes to life around him on stage, performed by a cast that includes two time Tony Award winner Sutton Foster, Georgia Engel, Beth Leavel and more. My personal favorite is Georgia Engel who you might remember from the "Mary Tyler Moor Show" or on “Everybody Loves Raymond” as Pat McDougal.
The creative team includes scenic designer David Gallo, costume designer Gregg Barnes, lighting designer Ken Billington and Brian Monahan and sound designer Acme Sound Partners. Orchestrations are by Larry Blank, dance and incidental music arrangements by Glen Kelly (The Producers), music director/vocal arrangements by Phil Reno and technical supervision by Brian Lynch. Hair design is by Josh Marquette, make up design is by Justen M. Brosnan.
Please, if any of you have any extra change in your pocket, run to see this show! It’s the best damn musical on Broadway right now.
