Soy Debuts in your Underwear

2xist.art.jpg

Underwear continues to become more comfortable and more environmentally cute. 2(x)ist débuted its brand new underwear line this past Monday at the Steven Amadee gallery in Tribeca. Upon entering the event, delicious red and white wines were served alongside cheeses and chocolates all in promotion of their new environmentally friendly SOY underwear line. Soy, as in the vegetarian delight? Yes. The underwear is actually made with Soy, making it the smoothest and softest fabric 2(x)ist has ever used in any of their product lines.

At the gallery, the new ad campaigns by artist Robert Sturman were on display. The art infused photography advertisements will feature beautiful men posing in natural outdoor settings in2(x)ist SOY underwear. The new ad campaign launches this spring, advertising the fresh collection of briefs, socks, and T’s. A pair of undies start at $19.95.

It seems that the new trend in clothing is becoming environmentally friendly while using natural “ingredients”. Other companies have launched natural garments as well using hemp, corn, and bamboo. Last year, women’s designer house, Spiegel sold a mail-order dress made out of soy fibers.

It’s interesting that various companies are going “healthy” with soy. Everyone loves the idea of soy; from milk to soy chicken to clothing; soy is taking over. It is a bit perplexing to understand the process of creating soy into clothing. Cotton comes directly from the plant and after a few processes, cotton material is created. In order for soy material to be created, the soy plant must go through rigorous chemical treatments, which in turn, change the composition of what soy really is. Is this truly friendly to the environment or do the chemical processes to use soy as a clothing ingredient cancel the environmentally conscience factor out? After further research, it has been determined that the process of using soy as a clothing component actually does not require hazardous pesticide use, which is a required factor when producing cotton clothing.

The whole soy idea in clothing is fascinating. Possibly in the future, new and more modern technologies of clothing creation will emerge, as we have seen with this new soy trend. The touch, the feel, of cotton…may one day be replaced by some local products found in the produce aisle of your local supermarket. And for all of you who are wondering- no, the SOY underwear is not edible.
