Legendary Barber Goes to Hollywood

Sweeney Todd.jpg

Hollywood is buzzing with reports that the highly eccentric Tim Burton is planning to direct the big screen version of the Broadway smash hit Sweeney Todd, about the “demon barber of Fleet Street.” Burton has reportedly been trying to make the film for years, but after talks with Warner Brothers led to a dead end, he put the movie on the back burner and focused on other projects like The Corpse Bride.

To bring life to the legendary barber, Burton will reunite with his muse of sorts, Johnny Depp. To date, the team has made five films together including Edward Scissorhands and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Sweeney Todd first premiered on Broadway in 1979, where it won eight Tony Awards. Now in its second revival, the musical is once again garnishing critical praise, and the star Michael Cerveris (Tony Winner for Assassins) is expected to receive a Tony nomination for his portrayal of the barber.
