City of West Hollywood Hosts Celebration of Artistic Freedom Charity Event to Benefit Amnesty International, Artists for a New South Africa and the ACLU Foundation of Southern California

The City of West Hollywood will host the Celebration of Artistic Freedom Academy Awards "Party With a Purpose" viewing dinner, after party and awards program on Sunday, March 5, 2006. The dinner and Academy Awards viewing party will feature red carpet arrivals and will take place at Pearl Restaurant and Nightclub located at 665 N. Robertson Boulevard, followed by the after party at Factory, upstairs from Pearl and located at 652 N. LaPeer Drive in West Hollywood. This event is hosted by the City, and benefits Amnesty International, Artists for a New South Africa and the ACLU Foundation of Southern California, and focuses on human and civil rights while honoring creative excellence.

This is the fourth year in which the City of West Hollywood is hosting this event which distinguishes itself as unique among the usual Oscar fervor, by paying tribute to those artists who both entertain and embrace social responsibility. It also serves as a reminder to fellow artists, activists and community members the important role that those working in the entertainment industry can play in shaping our global village.

Being honored at this year's event is special guest Jose Ramos-Horta, a prominent leader in the human rights movement, a 1996 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, and the Foreign Minister of East Timor since independence in 2002. Recipients for this year's awards are Mira Sorvino and the Lions Gate film, "Crash." Mira Sorvino is receiving the Artist of Conscience Award for her superior body of work throughout her career, including her most recent starring role in "Human Trafficking," a thought-provoking film about the international sex slave trade. Also being honored is the profound Academy Award-nominated film "Crash," including producers Cathy Schulman, Don Cheadle, Bob Yari, Mark R. Harris, Bobby Moresco, and Paul Haggis. "Crash" is being honored for its groundbreaking and provocative look at the state of race relations today.
