While growing up in a small town in Maine, every Valentine’s Day we would have a party at school, which consisted of over dosing on sugar, buying carnations for one dollar and giving every person in your class a cheesy card that came in a box of twenty for about three dollars. It was polite to give everyone in the class a card, no matter if you liked them or not. The carnation game was a different story. Leading up to Valentine’s Day, you played the game of guessing who would get a carnation and from whom. The couples that were, “going out,” obviously were recipients, but there were the surprise secret crushes.
The times have changed since those innocent carnations, now you find yourself in a confusing relationship, with no invite yet, and the dreaded day quickly approaching. I am still new to the Los Angeles area, so I thought I could give sexy singles somewhere to go on Valentine’s Day. I turned to my trusty search engine Google and searched, “Single in LA on Valentine’s Day.” In a matter of seconds 4.8 million hits were returned, none of things in LA to actually do, but a bit of helpful advice.
1. Please remember, like most other holidays Valentine’s Day is a commercial holiday not driven by love and relationships, but the bottom line for chocolatiers, Hallmark and flower shops.
2. Send yourself a bouquet of flowers at the office, act surprised when they arrive. It is always nice to have flowers sitting on your desk.
3. Treat yourself to a fun loving gift, whether it is a massage or a new sexy top you can wear out on Friday night after this horrible day has past.
4. Plan a get together with all your single friends, drink, eat and be merry.
5. Plan a cozy evening at home. Turn off all the lights, light candles all over your apartment, open a two buck chuck bottle of wine and sink into a warm bubble bath.
I wish everyone a happy Valentine’s Day and hope that we all end up with the love of our lives, not for the candy and flowers, but for the companionship, love and laughter.
